Illegal to return alcohol in Louisiana

I tried doing something I've never had to do before, which is return a twelve pack of Yuengling. I cracked open the first bottle, and it was extremely spoiled. Even the color was way off. Hoping that it was just that bottle, I opened a second one and it was the same. Yuengling is a beer of choice that I've been drinking for decades, so I'd know when the flavor is off, but this was entirely undrinkable.
I took it back to the grocery store and was met with, "It's illegal to return alcohol in Louisiana." I learned something new today. They instructed me to toss the beer away at the front entrance garbage.

I think they just didn't want to refund your money.

Pretty sure they just lied to you so they didn't have to deal with it (could have been disallowed due to store policy but didn't want to explain it).

Louisiana: Unused alcohol may be returned after special events in Louisiana with a temporary liquor permit. Wholesalers may also accept alcohol returns for ordinary and usual commercial reasons like spoilage, breakage, leaks, etc. Customer returns aren’t specified in Louisiana laws.
Maybe you should call that grocery store and talk to a manager to ask for their policy.

Yeah. Ask to speak with the manager. Good call.

Wait you tried to bring a beer that is available in Louisiana, to Louisiana?

I've never been to a place that allowed people to return alcohol.

You should have responded "Okay. Then is it illegal to do THIS?" and cracked open each beer and poured them on the floor, one by one, never losing eye contact with the person who told you that alcohol can't be returned. When you finish, you say, "Looks like I just returned your alcohol" and Tupac walk out the store.

It's illegal to return opened alcohol.
The proper thing to do is ask the manager to "swap" it out.

I’ve done it for the same reason as you. Dorignac’s circa 2007.

Would be bad to get an open container ticket bringin’ it back to the liquor store?

I’ve done it at Costco before when buying for large party. Definitely not illegal

As an ex retail manager, I would have asked you to properly discard it in the trash can and then given you a replacement on the house. I’m not sure about the law but I know it is (in general) a bad idea to “return” food items.

It is illegal in Georgia.
I purchased a sixer of Stone IPA from Publix a couple of years back. Got home and happened to notice that the "best by" date had passed by like 6-7 months. I took it back up to the store and they said they couldn't accept it. After asking how many other products they have on their shelves that are 6 months past expiration, they relented and let me exchange for a different brew.
It's a shitty law, especially as beer drinkers have become more aware of freshness issues and breweries tag their products with bottling or best by dates. I guess we have distributors to thank....if you can't return alcohol purchases, they don't have to eat the costs of expired product.

Objective irony is a chain of the patriarchy, shite lord. He identifies as ironified. Who are you?

I’ve bought a few skunked bottles of wines but too lazy to go back, just drank it since it was still alcohol I paid for and probably wouldn’t get me sick

Call the brewers 800 number to explain the issue. That will get results quickly. I worked for Budweiser for years and had someone call and say beer tasted bad, after drinking 8 out of a 12pack. Had guy from st Louis check my whole route as a result of the call. The customer got a voucher for free case also.
