But I put zero weight into it at all. None.
It's one number. No one should base their life on one number. However, that one number combined with others is a useful tool whether you think so or not.

You're so hormonal these days

Not to mention that everyone gets all riled up about a measure that they don't understand. Almost every doctor or scientist is going to agree with you that it's not the BEST measure available but it isn't total shite either.
Wouldn't that imply that we do in fact understand?

No because you want to completely erase it from all use. No one that truly understands it wants to do that.

Who is it serving? Answer cannot be "the average person."

medical professionals, insurance companies, etc that use statistics to keep track of general health of the populace

The current BMI formula leads to confusion and misinformation, Trefethen believes. The height2 term divides the weight by too much when people are short, and by too little when they are tall. The result is short people being told they are thinner than they really are, while tall people are made to think that they are fatter than they are.
When Quetelet devised the BMI formula, there were no computers, calculators or electronic devices, so he opted for a very simple system. Trefethen does wonder, though, why institutions today on both sides of the Atlantic continue using the same flawed formula.
Perhaps "nobody wants to rock the boat", Trefethen suggested. Various agencies and institutions have agreed on something, which is comforting. There are probably other flawed formulae out there.

So there ya go. Proof that you don't understand.
Posted on 5/26/15 at 1:43 pm to LNCHBOX
so come up with a better system and you will be rich
until then, it serves a purpose

Link? Or is my questioning who is served by a formula that I feel doesn't do what it claims to well enough your proof?

So unless I have a better answer, I can't say that it's flawed?

what? everyone admits that its flawed
y'all say its useless and serves no one

I can't criticize it if I don't have the answer?

completely writing something off as useless is another

If you came to that conclusion using BMI, it's garbage.
BMI kind of works when using it for large groups of people, but on an individual scale it's not that beneficial. Fat percentage is probably the best way to measure "ideal weight", but even then the heart is the limiting factor.

Well, in my very first post in this thread I said I think ideal weight based off BMI is bullshite. I'm going to stand by my original post, because I still feel that way. There are better ways for doing it on an individual level, which is what the OP referenced.

like I said earlier, it was just meant to be a screening, and screenings are meant for larger sample sizes, so for an individual, its really not that useful as a measure of health
it could give someone a decent idea of a weight strive for though

Adolphe Quetelet created this measurement back in 1835.
