Measuring chest and waist would be just as easy as measuring height and weight. If it turned out to be a better measure, people would use it but it's not a better measure.
That's BS. A person that is 6' - 221 lbs is obese on the BMI. Now let's throw in two other variables.
Person A-
6'
221 lbs
46.5" chest
34" waist
Person B-
6'
221 lbs
39.00" chest
44" waist
One person is very athletic build and is lean. The other is a complete fatass. They have the exact same BMI.

you dont think we can come up with a 3 variable formula that can better calculate a persons propensity to obesity or lack thereof, than BMI?
can we? probably
can we create one that is simpler for the average person? probably not
and I wonder just how much that 3rd variable would help? for individual and small sample sizes, sure, but over large sample sizes? would it really help? probably not

Why on earth is this on the F & DB?

No. You know why? Because it is exact. It is the most efficient way to figure out the third side of a right triangle.

godfrickingdammmit
we all know BMI doesn't account for bodybuilders
what % of the population do you people think are body builders? because apparently y'all think its about 50%

I just gave you a perfect example in the post right about this on how a slight tweak can make BMI ALOT more accurate with hard rooted data.

Wooooooah baw. Im not a bodybuilder. Dont bring that cracka shite in heya.
Edit: You dont have to be a bodybuilder to have a larger chest than waist size. You DO have to be lean, however, and that would solve all of the variation in BMI.

I am not a body builder. I am also not obese in any way, except BMI. But hey, it's a great metric that works for the average person.

did you? cause I didn't see your formula

Which is what we all should do as a society. We should ALL have a moderate amount of activity on a daily basis. I shouldnt be in the minority for lifting.

Relativity man. I didnt mean that what I posted was hard rooted data. I meant that when you sit down with Shaniqua to do your BMI, instead of her writing two numbers down and looking at a chart, she'd be writing three or maybe even...FOUR numbers down. All of those numbers would be hard data because the measurements would have just been done on you.

well it is also a measure of general health, and being too big, even muscularly, isn't always that healthy
the entire point is that BMI has its purpose, but every time this thread comes up, you have a bunch of bros losing their shite because some BMI calculator said they were obese, and I have no idea why they care so much?

Im not one of them. It says Im obese, and I dont care. Im not so emotionally inept that I let a number fool me into thinking Im a fatass. I let the mirror do that. The thing is, when people discredit it, other people defend it. We are discussing the credibility of it.

Found the perfect paper for you:

well I alsothink the majority of people that say "hey I'm jacked, BMI doesn't work for me" greatly exaggerate their muscle mass

That honestly would be a better metric than BMI for women. Women typically gain weight in below their waist.
