Nope. I say it from a guy who played on the LSU tennis team. We were lean as shite, not muscular at all, and most of us were at the very top end of the "normal" range. We could lose 35 lbs and still be "healthy" according to BMI. I remember as a team when we looked at it we made the exact joke it would take AIDS for us to get to our low end number

I sort of think this on the grand scale, if not for everyone. HungryOne made the same point earlier.

I knew several XC runners in college that were in that range and they were not "sickly", but rather healthy

hell I was 6'2" 155 lbs when I graduated HS and I wasn't "sickly"

Do you have zero weight in your legs? I mean zero? I was 6'0" and 160 entering college and was so damn skinny it is absurd. And to answer your point, I do think XC runners look sickly for the most part

At my "ideal weight" I'd look like a skeleton. Different bodies are meant to hold different amounts of weight. For someone to say every person that is 5'10" should be a specific weight is ridiculous.

Sounds like something a fat person would say.

I am 6'3" with a max. weight of maybe 190 pounds (I conveniently forget what it actually says). I weighed 180 pounds when I completed basic training in the army about a hundred years ago and have hit that weight several times in the years since.

I feel best when I am at 200 pounds or below. At 185, my cardiologist tells me that I can not lose any more weight and stay healthy. I say this to say that evidently not all doctors agree with the "ideal weight" charts.

I have a large frame and can (IMO) hold 10+ pounds above my "ideal weight" just fine.

Here is me in my pimp arse floral bathing suit on senior trip, at 6'0" 160 lbs. According to BMI, I could get down 24 lbs to 136 and be healthy and normal Maybe if I got the magic sauce from Magic Johnson

Not really, Manny Pacquiao is 5'5" 145 lbs and looks like skin and bones and he's an elite athlete. Someone that is 5" taller than him and 15 lbs lighter is sick. There's no justification for that. I understand what youre saying because we are a nation of sick fatasses and youre assuming that by association and lack of proper perspective it can be nearly impossible for the average American to determine what is and isnt too skinny/too fat. Im just thinking youre a little off on this one. 5'10" 130 lbs is a sick person.

I actually have pretty strong legs and did back then too

I was a hurdler and played basketball...

I just had zero fat

those are pro marathon runners, but looking sickly and being sickly are kinda different things, no?

its funny how y'all hate BMI because it generalizes too much and doesn't account for all variables but now y'all are certain that 5'10" 130 is a sick person, no matter what

which is fine

but sickly looking doesn't mean unhealthy

BMI isn't a measure aesthetics

Ok. I will also say I do not think 5'10" 130lbs would be a healthy weight though for MOST people. I think they would be a "sick" person in general

I'm amazed at people who can lose or gain 30 pounds. If I gain 5 pounds I feel fat. If I lose 5 pounds I feel weak and emaciated.

I don't understand why this is the de facto argument. I'm normal and I'm pissed about it! What??? But, but, I'd still be normal at this lower weight but I'd hate what I look like! Ok, so don't get that small. What's the problem? Does everyone really have that much of a problem contemplating what a range of values mean?

Not to mention that everyone gets all riled up about a measure that they don't understand. Almost every doctor or scientist is going to agree with you that it's not the BEST measure available but it isn't total shite either. Same goes for many, many measurements in the medical world.

Relax. It doesnt anger me. But I put zero weight into it at all. None.
