Iced Coffee Question

I dont' drink it, my wife likes it. Since it is summer time she was talking about having some in the morning. What is the deal, you just brew your standard coffee and pour it over ice?
Or is there a particular coffee that is better for iced. I know, I'm stupid but I am a simple man: I drink hot coffee black.

they make instant iced coffee mixes that are good
but yes, you can make a pot of coffee the night before and put it in the fridge overnight

Make a simple syrup (50/50 water and sugar, heated so the sugar dissolves, then cooled). Use this instead of granulated sugar which is difficult to dissolve in cold liquid.

PJ's Iced Mochas
)
To start out, there are a few things you need to have before you can get started. The process takes at least 12 hours, so you need to have time at the beginning and end of that 12-hour period. You need to buy the coffee beans ground a certain way (courser than the usual coffee you get at the store so the beans won’t clog the filter). PJ’s also let me in on a secret: they add some vanilla extract to the coffee while it’s brewing
I was so excited to make some coffee yesterday that I decided to start making it at 11:30am. Doing so automatically broke the first rule – to have time at the end of the 12-hour process (I’m married, and even when I’m off of work my bed time is around 10:30 haha). I decided it would be ok and I would just stay up late for my coffee.
The directions to make the coffee seemed like a very delicate ballet of a process, so I was really nervous about messing it up. First, you pour in 1/2 cup of water and then 1 cup of the coffee grinds. Then you pour in 2 cups of water very slowly in a circular motion. Next you slowly add 1 more cup of the coffee grinds. Last, you add the last 2 cups of water very slowly in a circular motion going the opposite direction (no, I couldn’t make that up if I tried). Then comes the easy part – let it sit at room temperature for 12 hours.
This is an after picture - pretend there is still water in there and not just grinds :-)
After 12 hours, you unplug the bottom of the brewing container and let it drain through the filter into the glass decanter (it takes about 15-20 minutes). Then it goes into the refrigerator – and the next morning you have iced coffee!!

Doesn't the Toddy thingie make super-strong coffee extract (versus a ready-to-drink drink)?
I haven't made a Toddy batch in a few years. May have break it out & revisit.

I dont know much about it, just know it saves my wife from going to PJs every morning! She normally makes a batch sunday night and it lasts the week.

If your going to do it yourself, get the toddy. If you want good ice coffee, you have to cold brew for 8-12 hrs...depending on how strong you want it. Add a little vanilla to it once its done. I can definitely taste difference between places who hot brew and chill (la madelines) and those that cold brew over night (cc's). CC's actually makes some pretty good ice coffee....the best is at rue de la course (nola).

Coarse ground coffee (get something good from a coffeeshop) sitting it a jar with water overnight (doesn't have to be `cold'), say 8-48 hours, works well. Cut it with milk about 50-50, but to taste. Same with sweetening.
Saves a ton, keeps a long time, and some of the savings can be used to get good coffee.
Coarse ground is the key. A decent burr grinder and french press would be a nice upgrade or present if she's into it. Burr grinder is important to get even grinds.

This is the way to go. Full bag of community coffee in the toddy will give you a full container of super concentrated coffee for iced coffee. you only need a small amount in each drink.

I thought iced coffee would suck until I went into a Starbucks in San Jose, Calif. during the summer when it was 105 degrees and I had to walk a half mile to my hotel. It was GREAT. Never made it myself.
