While we’re on the subject, I went this past August. Mind blowing is a fair description.

I believe it. Next time I’m in Chicago, I’ll definitely plan on going.
Osteria Francescana was an incredible experience, but Alinea appears to truly be dinner and a show. Really want to experience it.

Tickets was fantastic. My wife and I went in April and told the server to just pick our dishes and keep them coming. They designed a tasting for us and I believe including dessert we had around 20 different dishes. They started us with a cava and gave us 3-4 dishes designed per glass. Then we moved to a white and a red. We wrote in prior asking to go to the dessert room and brought it back up when we arrived but they already had us on the list to go after the meal. I recommend trying to get a spot in there if you can.
Cellarer wine bar was also great and didn’t require a reservation.
LINK - The No Reservations episode with Jose Andres - first 5 minutes or so are at Tickets i believe.
El Bulli looked absolutely phenomenally incredible btw.

So I haven’t been to Alinea but did visit Next and The Aviary. While both were great, the party tricks and pedantic lecturing got old halfway thru meal at Next. Food was delicious at next (was French nouvelle cuisine theme). Drinks and snacks at Aviary we’re about 50% higher a cost than made me comfortable and they were either the most balanced cocktails I’ve ever had or there was very little booze in them.

I did Aviary once, wouldn’t do it again for the reasons you said. Not sure I would even recommend it.
I've heard other people say the Alinea/Next experience is too overwrought which is understandable. I'm pretty sure Bourdain complained about it. I wasn't bothered by the length or contrivances (maybe because we had to 'settle' for the shorter Salon experience) and the servers were surprisingly down to earth. My only complaint was that the most substantive dish we had was centered around a potato. It was good and everything but it was still a potato in the end. Overall though it was the most unique meal of my life.
