Which species are you getting right now? I'm guessing sockeye at the price which is prime right now. The king salmon at the beginning of the season is hands down my favorite of the three species but typically closer to $40-50lb depending where you buy it.

It's very good and normally Ruffinos does it this time of year. Only available for a few weeks.

Exactly what I've heard, regarding Ruffino's.

Didn't know you could get it privately.

I am told that this is some of the best salmon ever.

Can anyone comment on this.....

Its a marketing creation. They used to ship Sockeye from the Copper River to overseas markets as they were no different than other Sockeye and market conditions dictated they weren't able to sell enough fresh salmon so they froze it and shipped it overseas. But the fishermen from Copper River started marketing directly to high end Seattle restaurants and built a brand following. They claim they treat the fish better after the catch...i.e. pull nets more often so salmon are still alive, bleed the gills immediately and ice immediately. I eat a lot of PCNW Salmon....grill some every couple of weeks... and I can't tell the difference between Copper River and other Sockeye.

Thanks. Yeah, I'd call that a boom. I eat a ton of salmon too, but because we are so far removed from fresh side of the industry, I/we are basically none-the-wiser.

When I was at Rouse's yesterday at the seafood counter there was a woman purchasing pounds of farm raised Atlantic salmon. Her daughters and her said that they LOVE salmon and I implored her to try some of the Copper River salmon. She purchased a filet, and while the clerk was helping me, I noticed she smelled both filets. She made a face when smelling the Atlantic salmon. After I was finished, she returned the Atlantic and went with all Copper River while thanking me profusely. I told her the story of them only being available for about three weeks in June, the fact that the salmon have to bulk up before the long steep journey up Copper River because they don't eat on the way, and that they're caught at the mouth of the river when they are bulked up on absolute goodness.

Zappa, I could be wrong, but I believe there are no nets involved. It's my understanding that these are line caught by Native Americans, and there is a strict daily limit as well.

And yes, for $25 per pound I probably purchased Coho and not King. I didn't think to ask.

Rouses and Albertsons here both have Copper River Sockeye fresh with Albertsons coming in today and on special for $14.99 which is a real deal compared to $25.99 FYI. Both are from the same distributor according to the boxes they were shipped in,I looked at both.

Native Americans who have been sanctified by the Gods of Ahtna Nenn through the ritual sacrifice of a virgin Sockeye and who use only Moose Hide boats to travel the sacred waters of the Atna tuu......at least that what it says on the info sheet next to the price/ lb. ....Oh, there is now a Prince William Sound Salmon....new species keep being discovered up there....amazing.

They do seem to have better fishing practices than normal. But is it worth triple what other Sockeye go for?

fishermen on the Copper River use the best available practices when harvesting salmon. Utilizing a process called trolling, they pull their gillnets in frequently, which is considered a low impact form of fishing. After being caught, Copper River salmon are iced and shipped by air directly from the processor. Hello, freshness!
