First thing first, thanks to everyone for your recommendations before our trip. We had a great time and had two great meals thanks to your input.

We decided on Hugo’s and Giacomo’s since we love Mexican and Italian. The menus were also impressive and overall they seemed more like our kind of places. We do look forward to trying Reef and Mark’s in the future.

So, night 1 was at Hugo’s.

Complimentary chili peanuts plus chips, salsa, and guacamole we ordered. All of this was above average, but I could have eaten a pound of those peanuts. So simple but so good.

I ordered their Hugo Margarita. They shake them tableside then pour. I like how they only salt half of the rim of the glass too. It was stout and flavorful

Next they lit a candle before bringing our dinner. Bow-chicka-bowwaa

My entree was seasoned shredded goat meat cooked in a banana leaf. It was served with a cactus salad, a dark mole, guacamole, fresh torillas, and a habenero salsa. The goat was moist and flavorful, the cactus salad was a pleasant surprise(never had that before), and the salsa had a great flavor but was very hot.

Mrs. SW ordered the Mariscos al Ajillo which is sautéed lobster, shrimp, scallops and octopus served with arroz blanco. It also included two oysters. The octopus was the best thing I ate this night.

We ordered two sides and split them. The first is roasted cauliflower, poblano sauce, peppers, onions, tomato. The sauce on this dish was amazing.

The second was smashed crispy potatoes, salsa de ajo, cambray onions, poblanos with chipotle butter. Mrs. SW preferred this one, but she's a sucker for potatos. I enjoyed it as well, but the cauliflower was much better IMO.

We decided to splurge for dessert as well. Dulce de Leche stuffed Churros with hot chocolate and chocolate ice cream. True story, this was my first churro and I wanted a dozen more. The ice cream and chocolate were top notch as well.

All in all a fantastic experience. Great relaxed atmosphere, top notch food, and outstanding service.

I'm gonna rush through this one because I'm gonna have to leave in a bit

We started with a cheese board of assorted Italian imports and local artisanal cheeses, served with fried spicy almonds, fig orange preserves, fried fava beans and baguette .

I'm not a big fan of wine but I had a glass of the house chianti. I enjoyed it, but I can't elaborate much on it. The Mexican Sprite was excellent over ice. Hints of lime, lemon, and real sugar.

Next we tried two little hot dishes. First was rounds of semolina gnocchi, served over a bit of tomato sauce, topped with butter & parmigiano reggiano & baked until golden.

The other dish was shrimp marinated in harissa (homemade hot pepper sauce), sautéed with garlic, olive oil, lemon juice & a touch of butter served with baguette to dunk in the sauce. The was my favorite dish of the night. I sopped every drop of that sauce with bread.

Next we split the night's special for our main entree. We were too full already to order two separate dishes and this sounded great to both of us. It's red snapper and shrimp in a light tomato sauce with capers, green, black, and kalmata olives, and diced zucchini over hand made fresh pasta.

Next time you're in town and want Italian/one of the better places in Houston...look up Coltivare.

I like Giacomo's, always forget about it, though I think Vinoteca Poscol is a little better.

This place is nothing special. I feel bad that you chose to ate here on a weekend trip to Houston where you were looking for great restaurants.

On the other hand, Hugo's is amazing. If you like seafood, try his seafood restaurant next time, Caracol. I would look in to this 100% over Reef if I were you. Peska is worth a look too.

Hugo's Sunday brunch is also an experience. It's a buffet with live music.

ate at Giacomos many times before moving back to bama ... it's been rated very highly by almost every food critic since its opening, so it is indeed something special ... do agree about caracal, tho ...

Reef and Caracol are completely different places. Both good, but I wouldn't send someone to Caracol if they asked me for a seafood restaurant.

Reef is one of my all time favorite places here in town. Caswell has done an amazing job there.

Aside from the whole lobster, I've struggled to find anything on the menu at Caracol that was something extraordinary.

I do prefer Caracol's Sunday brunch to Hugo's. 30 bucks for all you can eat ceviche and raw oysters is my type of deal.

Interdasting. I'll have to try this. I wasn't blown away by Caracol's dinner menu either, though it was still good.

The Coltivare rec is a good one. I still need to go over and check out the new dinner service at Revival.
