Going by some math of other posters

2.25 oz piece * 3 pieces = 6.75 oz

6.75 oz / 16 oz = .421875 lbs

.421875 * 70 ppl = 29.5 lbs

The answer is 30 lbs

35 to be safe

ETA: As proof, to change it up at Christmas, my wife and I host a fish fry rather than traditional Christmas menu for about 30 people. We buy a half pound per person, and always have leftovers.

This is correct... cooking for a plated meal and for a grazing social event are two completely different numbers.
Usually 6-8oz protein portions for a grazing social event and even less when adding other heavy options to pick on. Its a shower not Thanksgiving.

Unless you're in Mobile, then it's 16 oz per person.

Josh and Sixth go after each other when they're in the same threads sometimes. They need to go to Sonic and simply ignore each other in food threads if that's possible.

Thanks. Thought for a minute there we needed a catfish calculator.

I think we still need one.

The formula is pretty simple:

X = number of people to serve
y = pounds of catfish to fry

X/2 = y

Considering your frozen catfish comes in 15# cases, you need either 2 or 3 cases to feed 70 people. I would fry 2 if there's a bunch of sides etc. Take the 3-5oz filets and cut them into strips to make it go further.

Depends on what kinda hogs the mom-to-be has as friends. Might want to plan heavy.

Define fat?

By my math: 300lb fat arse divided by 1lb of filets = not enough fish.

I worked at FudRucker's a long time ago one summer (a burger place) and featured a 1 pound burger. It was 1 pound raw, but if it was ordered medium it was probably only 3/4 pound cooked. I only ever saw 1 customer finish one.

And fish doesn't shrink and lose weight near as much as beef does.

I can't image one pound of meat per person. It's insane. Sure, one or two guys might actually eat a pound, but then there's going to be people in the group who won't eat any, they'll just eat the finger foods, or maybe take one little fried nugget just to be polite to the cook.

BMI>X

X/6 - X/5 + X/3 = X/15 + 7

1 pound per person is way way too much for portion sizes for fried fish.

Careful, he will call you dirty names and say you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I tell him the truth (that 1 pound per person is ridiculous) and he calls me names. Dude needs to realize he’s wrong and take the loss.

Pretty much every catering company is going to quote you 4oz to 6oz of fried catfish strips per person.

If you are eating at a restaurant and the fried fish is your meal, you are looking at 8oz to 12 oz being about the max for a serving.

I did a party for 75 a month ago. We had 30lbs at the ready and left with 2 gallon ziplocs at the end of the night. Filets are sliced into 3 or 4 strips which is any easy way to stretch your quantity. There was also 6 or 7 others items on the menu.
