I know it's an old wives tale that they have to all be alive when they hit the water, but if kept in the cooler would one still taste ok if it died the day before? Has a study ever been done on this? I know crabs are ok, but is it that crawfish decompose so much quicker? I know before I've had that one crawfish that tasted like bad liver. I wonder how long he'd been dead.

Never really tried it, I usually just throw the dead ones out.

I do to. I was mainly wondering because of a situation I had last year: Had people coming over for a boil. Washed and sorted that afternoon. Huge storm comes up and we canceled until the next night. Did I need to sort again the next day?

Not really sure because all the crawfish I eat are dead.

I would never eat a dead crab or a dead crawfish.

If you've eaten many, then you've eaten one.

I'm just the opposite. I can eat anything that's alive. I'd especially worry about the crawfish pinching the back of the throat hanging down thing.

I only eat what I cook in the shellfish arena, so I know they are alive and kicking when they hit the pot.

I would especially if they weren't on ice.

Going through Shreveport the other day I saw some signs at a store that said "Live $1.99". I wonder what all those guys from out of state, who are working the gas fields, think when they see those signs.

Crabs that are dead will taste different and will be mushy. I wouldn't eat them unless you like mushy crabs.

Dead crawfish will taste the same. They will taste different and the meat will start to deterioate inside the tail. Not a good taste. If it hasn't been dead long you might not notice it.
