How long do they really give these people on cooking shows?

Most specifically Guy’s grocery games, the one I’m watching now. There is no possible way these persons are doing all this shite in 30 minutes. You can’t run thru a grocery store, buy kale, chicken thighs and all kinds of other stuff then perfectly plate fried chicken, greens and biscuits in 30 minutes. If it’s even real to begin with I bet they give them 3-4 hours.

There was a reddit thread about this a week or two ago. Someone said the iron chef type shows really are only an hour, but they know the ingredient the night before, and only need to have one plate of each dish finished in an hour

A chef I know was a chopped contestant that made it to the final round. He said the taping of the show took 5.5 hours...

I was told by someone that claims to know someone that was on Chopped that they're told the basket ingredients about 10 minutes before each round.

Drew Magary from Deadspin was on Chopped(and won) and confirmed the filming takes all day and is exhausting.

This article from a contestant doesn’t say that. Says they’re standing in front of the basket for 15 minutes before they open it though. That could still be 10 minutes before the cook time starts though.

A friend of mine won an episode of Guy's Grocery Games, he said that they had very little time to plan it out, and the cook times were accurate. Basically he said they have the time it took to set up the "game" each time to think about it. He also said most people were done with time to spare and they always add a little extra plate cleaning or something at the very end so that it seems like everyone is just barely finishing in time.

I wondered about this on the show Beat Bobby Flay.
The person going against Flay can name any dish they want, but yet they’ll have all the ingredients they need in the “kitchen” no matter how simple or exotic their “signature dish” is.
