How is Gris Gris (the restaurant)? UPDATE Page 1

I see posts about Gris Gris frequently on the Where NOLA Eats Facebook page. They're all very positive. I didn't find much here, but the search pulled me up rather than the restaurant. Anyone here been?
We went over the weekend and loved it. We sat at the "kitchen counter" right in the middle. Great vibe and the chef is very engaging. He delivers every plate to the counter customers. Enjoyed visiting with him. I had the pork belly on the compressed watermelon with jalapeno demi-glace. Excellent. Other person had the caesar salad. He makes the dressing and I've forgotten from where he said he got it. I think it was a family member. Quite a few of the dishes are based on family recipes.
I had the whole fried redfish as pictured in this thread. I thought it was wonderful. It's not like any fried fish. Very light crisp skin. The meat was moist, fresh, purely tasty. It's a beautiful dish and I saw it prepared at least about 10 times while we were there. Other person had the shrimp and grits also very good.
We had the pie for dessert. I think it was sort of a praline pie and I've forgotten the description. It's not listed on the website. Also had the bread pudding which was quite good.
The stools are really comfortable. There were some neat heaters outside where people were seated.
The only thing that was a downer is the only bathroom is up some rather steep stairs. I have one of those nasty arthritis diseases and this was really painful by the time the night was over. I've been in pain ever since, but this too shall pass, I hope. I would definitely go back and try some other dishes. The entire experience was delicious and fun. I think it makes a difference sitting at the counter. More fun.

My friend went there and really liked it. Said it was great and I trust his opinion.

Thanks, FB. It's mentioned so often on that page, but I couldn't recall seeing anything here. May give it a try for lunch next week.

Was thinking of trying it for lunch, but this redfish court-bouillon served at night looks outstanding.

It was a joke. I have no doubt there are some Jones restaurants and bars in the states

I had an Uber from MSY last time I was there and it happened to be the father of the guy who opened that place. Never did try it, but I follow them on Instagram. Looks like a really cool place and the Uber driver was a super nice guy. I need to try it next time.

Just had an article about Todd and Brett's 18 places they reviewed and will return. Gris Gris made the list.

I think I read that article also. It definitely looks like a cool place. Bar looks very nice and there's upstairs seating on the balcony which would be great in nice weather. The bar type seating/"kitchen table" looks fun. Seating with the bar chairs without backs doesn't look comfortable for very long. I don't like bar stools for dining. Otherwise, everything about it looks great.

We ate there the last time we were in town.
Chicken gizzard app was excellent.
Pork belly was good
My wife had the shrimp and fried green tomatoes and loved it
I must have had a special for dinner as I don't see what I had on the menu but don't recall what I had as I drank a lot that night

The style of courtbullion I like is Luke's. This is a whole fried fish with a bowl of creole.

My wife ate there with some friends last weekend. One of the girls ordered a burger and asked for some mayo. They brought out a squeeze bottle of blue plate.
They also got some kind of pork belly she said was meh & oysters that were not memorable

Is blue plate supposed to be a bad thing? Or did she ask for mayo when ordering and they brought it out instead of putting it on?

I don’t know a place in New Orleans that serves a good burger that doesn’t make their own mayo.
I’ve seen the same great reviews that OP is talking about. Was just weird to hear they bring out blue plate squirt bottle.

Yes, it is and that's what I find so appealing.

Making your own Mayo is pretty much a waste of time though. Blue plate or dukes will be better.
Places usually just make their own and call it an aioli to be hipster.
I’m okay with a place not making their own mayo. Kind of a silly thing to complain about don’t you think?
