If you use tomato, hit it with salt and pepper. No matter there is salt in the meat, pickles, etc. It will be much better if the tomato has S&P directly on it.

Bottom bun and up...mayo, onion, pickle, mustard with patty on top. Cheese on patty then whatever else on top of that.

The only thing you need that is of vital importance is to have a barrier between bun and patty.
If you don't have a barrier, then you need to rest the patty on a paper towel so it doesn't make the bun soggy with the grease.
The best barrier is an onion slice on the bottom, patty on top of that, tomatoes on top of that and then lettuce above that to keep the tomatoes from making the bun soggy.
Everything went needs to be in the middle and have a barrier.

my only requirement is the mayo be on the bottom bun.
If I eat any meat between two pieces of bread, mayo is going on both pieces of bread

I’ve never put anything between the patty and the bottom other than a condiment/sauce. That concept is foreign to me. I don’t really give a shite about the order of anything except for the cheese needs to be on the meat, and condiments/sauces on the bread.

I really like mayo on bottom and avocado (natures mayo) on top.
