Gonna try to start brewing 10 gallon batches now that I got a keggle for a brew pot. Probably going to have to all be lower gravity stuff given that my mash tun is still the same 10 gallon cooler.

You know what, i have a keg with the top cut out, just needs a couple ports. Would like to have a port for a thermometer, another for the ball valve, and another for a site glass. May not need to buy a whole new kettle after all if i can get a buddy of mine to do the welding.

But I'm definitely doing some kind of hoppy & hazy APA and a chocolate raspberry porter for Zapp's.

I know i said i was doing Zapps this year, but i don't think i can squeeze it in this year. That and i don't have a spare homebrew keg sitting around. Maybe next year...or maybe this year if i decide to just go buy another keg between now and then.

I'm taking a hiatus until it warms up again. My past half dozen brew days have been below freezing, and I'm done with the cold for the year. Hopefully it'll warm up in a few weeks.

Ideally, I'd like to upgrade my setup. I like that Bre Boss setup that's been posted in here, but I'm not sure if it's on the budget for the year.

I guess I'll just work through my backlog of hops I have around and build beers around those and my stash of yeast. I have hallertau, hallertau blanc, lemondrop, citra, simcoe, FF7C, northern brewer, and sorachi ace I need to get used up.

I have three batches I need to get bottled, but I keep putting those off.

Anyone ever install a site glass on a kettle before? If so, how do you determine where to place it? I know low on the kettle, but does it need to be a certain distance. The articles i'm reading say to place it low, but doesn't go into detail. The height of the wort in the site glass will be the same height as in the kettle, but if you have your site glass too high, then it may read 6 gallons instead of 7, for example. Or do you measure how high 1 gallon of water is and drill in there for your site glass?

Is your sight glass already numbered?

aha!!!

Yeah i just thought about that. The only way that would matter is if your site glass was already numbered. Nevermind. Was overthinking the process. Thanks.

I figured that would be the case. Good luck with that install.

To answer your question from the previous page, I am going to get a lager brewed on Saturday.

10 lb Kolsch Malt

Some bittering hop at 60
Saphir for flavor/aroma

Zurich Lager Yeast

Fairly simple

I'm really enjoying our keggle plus the parts ordered from BrewHardware.com

Just converted a larger rectangular shaped ice chest into a mash tun to either have larger mashes or 2 mashes going at one time for higher ABV brews.

BugAC, you don't need to weld anything on a Keggle. I'd argue against it really. Weldless stuff from certain vendors is quality.

Have you used this hop before? Curious on the aroma/flavor profile of this one.

Also, do y'all have weldless or welded ports for your ball valves, thermometers, sight glass, etc...?

Just a step drill and some oil? I hear drilling through the stainless is a bitch if the metal heats up too hot, then it's damn near impervious.

Yes, that's all it took. Just went relatively slow and put some motor oil on there, don't know if that's what was called for but saw something about oil and that's all I had.

Was very easy and I'm not used to working with metal.

I've got these weldless fittings and they're great.

Did you use a braid or PVC?

Thinking of something like this:

In the same boat. I'm not much of a carpenter or anything, mainly because i haven't really had to be, but i really enjoy working on stuff myself, building things, etc... just don't ever really do it.

I was perusing the website and i really like this Sightglass.

I used a Bazooka Tube or whatever they're called I got from I_heart_beer on here a while back.

Haven't used it yet but I think it'll work just fine considering plenty of people use plumbing hose braid to filter mash.

Bug, I don't know about that sightglass setup. There's some things that are better about it, but I think in general it's less permanent and more likely to fail or have issues with it. I don't know. I haven't seen that one before.

Well i like that it flows back into the pot at the top. It also claims to be 100% guaranteed leak proof.

There shouldn't be any flowing going on.

You and I have had opposite experiences with that kind of setup then. I blame mine on too narrow of cuts by the builder though. I eventually ditched mine for a false bottom after a good many stuck sparges.

I used 3lbs of oats(15%) on my last beer and although it's been some years I have brewed a few rye iPas without issues. I brew 12 gallon batches.
