but were successful in brewing the hoppiest beer I've ever made. 346 ibu's in our ipa. Pretty excited about the finished product. Have to dry hop with 8 ounces after the Vermont ipa yeast does its job.

That's insane....

Sweet 8 pound, 6 ounce baby jesus!

I thought 100 was the "theoretical" top limit that your taste buds can notice?

I got all the brew stuff out of storage yesterday, brewing a batch Friday after work for tailgating/Oktoberfest.

Probably a session red IPA.

I'm not sure it there is a ceiling on the limit of your taste buds, but there is a threshold for the solubility of alpha acids in beer that tops out somewhere around 110 IBUs.

There is also a large difference in the calculated IBUs and actual IBUs on the higher end of the IBU scale.

Beers like Pliny the Elder calculate out at 200 or so IBUs, but in a lab measure closer to 90.

You going to try out some of that new red X malted grains or wheat?

That malt makes a pretty beer. I plan on brewing something with this as the base grain after the zoo event.

I plan on making a praline porter this weekend. I think that I am going to try to get started at daylight though, so I can be finished before it is ridiculously hot out

I found this on the AHA website when I was researching Red X...

The beer is a lager made from 90% Red X malt & 10% two row.

That is a pretty beer.

I have no idea how our taste buds are going to deal with the IPA from this weekend, but I am excited to find out.

We used HopShot...FYI you should never try some of the extract, especially if you want to continue drinking your beer.

I've seen some crazy homebrew infections before, but nothing like this nasty shite off reddit.

Yeah, those are maggots in his fermenter.

Apparently the guy had a crack in the lid of his bucket, used it anyway, and when his KBS clone had a blow out it pushed through the crack and attracted flies.

I was supposed to brew last weekend, but i did not. I have my grains and my yeast. How long do crushed grains stay good for? If I don't have to work sunday, i'm going to try to do it then, but if i do, then it will have to be next week or sometime in the future.

I'm of the opinion that they'll stay good for a long while as long as they're relatively air tight and dry.

Store them in a cool dark place too just to be safe.

I have them in a closet that shares the wall with the garage. I may move them though. It's about 74 degrees in the house, but that closet, it's about 85. They are still in the bag, and in a tupperware storage bin. I'll just place them on a shelf somewhere.

I've used grains that were milled weeks before and never had a problem.

Spent a little time this evening converting my fridge/freezer to a single chamber fermentation chamber. I can now ferment up to 20 gallons at a time.
