I bought this fan from amazon, it comes with a USB plug already attached and a speed control.

LINK

I glued a teflon spacer that I had onto the fan to get the magnet away from the fan motor and then glued on an old hard drive magnet. I also cut off the center part of the fan grill.

I used some screws and nuts to mount the grill so that I could adjust the height above the fan blade and also to mount the speed control knob. I also added some rubber feet to it, I had it in a black project box but for some reason it seemed to make it a good bit louder so I came up with this set up and it works perfectly. All for under $20, even if you had to buy everything but you probably have some of the stuff laying around.

I'm pretty sure I don't have much, if any, of that laying around, and I'm not sure I want to spend $100 on buying one.
Looks like a fun project to do though, maybe one of these days

You can buy one for $40. I bought one after my DIY cardboard one collapsed on itself. Stir plates really do make a huge difference for starters and cell counts.

Really? I haven't seen any for that kind if price. It would be a no-brainier for that price

Cool, thanks! I looked on AHS, amazon, and a few other sites

That one is 55 on amazon but doesn't have very good reviews

Awesome. I will consider that one when I buy one. Right now I just use a growler and swirl it when I go into the kitchen.

I have that one as well. I've had it for probably 2 or 3 years now. Use it much more now than I used to. No issues with it at all, and I believe the guy has a lifetime warranty on it.

When y'all make a starter with dregs that you will let go a while before brewing, do you leave it on the plate the whole time, or just a while, or what?

I will build it up on a sir plate and then transfer to White Lab vials for regular bottle dregs. That's what I'm doing with rds's brett strain.

Northern brewer just sent an email about their stir plate and free 2000 ml flask. Might be worth it or a good time to buy.

I bought that Vortex Stir Plate from them last week. I guess I should call and whine. But this Vortex is awesome. I have been using a little cheapo plate that worked ok on a 1 liter but was too small for a 2 liter. The stir bar would get thrown off. The Vortex handles it with no problem.

With dregs, I typically won't put it on the plate. Namely since I'm in no rush, so will just let it sit for a while.

I'll need some of whatever you brew with it.

I don't even have a stir plate or anything like that. I actually have a stir plate, petri dishes, pipettes, flasks, compound microscope, etc in my Amazon cart but have never pulled the trigger. The microbiologist/chemist in me wants to geek out on all that stuff but everything has worked out so far taking the lazy route

1. Get Brett pale ale from Rds
2. Drink beer
3. Send dregs to Bottomland
4. Get more beer
5. Drink beer
6. ???
7. Profit

It's genius!
