The waiter should never have a choice in adding the autograt. Selective application is inviting abuse like the kind you mentioned earlier where you add gratuity to tables that you don't think will tip well.

I hear you LALady...I was in Destin a week or two back and ate at LA Lagniappe. The waiter gave us horrible service. The worst I have had in years

That's funny.. the one time I said I had horrible service in my life was in Destin.

Service in destin blows. It always seem like we get some European that's pissed off that he has to wait on out of towners.

I had a couple both in t-shirts, jorts and Crocs seated 3' from me in a high end restaurant. I think they were treating themselves for getting the barn cleaned out. They weren't suitable to eat at Sonic, in their truck

where i work doesnt have that problem; no jeans, no shorts, no t-shirts, no hats....ever...period.

It's actually the other way around. Waiters can add tip because of abuse. A lot of people find any reason possible to hold tip, and a lot of people have no idea how to tip, it's that simple. I'm not saying you are one and, I'm not saying your not, but I'm guessing, well, I'll keep that to myself...lol
Again, on tables of 8 or larger or split checks the waiter (in some restaurants) has the choice...please keep up. If you are a good tipper and the server adds 20% he is just covering his/her arse. Add extra if they deserve it. I do.
If they don't add tip and have the ability to, it should be viewed as a complement to you. They are betting on a heavy tip...

He is keeping up and he made a good point. What you can't seem to comprehend is it's MY frickING MONEY, not the servers. It is MY decision on what he's getting not his. If I stiff him or give him 40% is up to ME not him. He knows the industry and how it works and if he doesn't like it he can go sell used cars which judging by the way you are willing to rip off old ladies, I'm guessing is the industry you moved on to.

And Martini, discrediting someone is usually a sign you lost the argument...
How would any waiter be ripping off anyone if it says on the menu, 20% gratuity added with parties larger than 8 and split checks?
You just don't have an argument you cheap frick.

I'm not arguing that dumbass. Read the thread. You said you did it arbitrarily, to old ladies because you THOUGHT you might get stiffed. And my reply to that was you do it to me you will get your pleasant arse stiffed.

If it is restaurant policy I will comply.

As I stated earlier you can't read. And your lost argument comprehension skills are lacking as well.

What a moron.

No you read, I'm getting tired of you twisting shite.

quote:

The policy at two of the fine dining restaurants I worked was 17.5 % on parties larger than eight or split checks. I as a waiter could apply that at any time I wanted. A table of 8 50+ year old ladies requesting separate checks, I would be stupid not to add tip. When Mr Manship came in, I wish I could have added17.5%. He requested me every Friday night and added10% every freaking time... He just didn't know any better, a lot like older women back in the day. A table of eight or 20 businessmen on the other hand, i would not add it. Its common sense. Fight the system, go ahead. My advice is stay home and cook for yourself. You sound like a restaurants nightmare bitching about how they always frick you at the drive through.

Now I'm tired of arguing with you man. I've read some of your other post. You seem like a decent dude and we are on the same page with most topics.
Let's just agree to disagree here...

If the restaurant has a policy of autogratting separate checks and large parties, it should be applied uniformly.

Your personal policy of applying the gratuity for women and the aged and probably blacks is wrong. Your attacks on Martini are indefensible. You are an idiot.

ETA: I doubt you ever worked fine dining.

You neglected to copy and paste your very first post in this thread.

You jammed old ladies because you assumed they were going to jam you.

And you state that. I am just commenting on your post.

As I said, read.

Dj pease explain this post

quote:

Ex waiter here, fine dining BR area. It's been a few years, but it is not uncommon for split checks to have the waiters judgement on wether or not they add tip. I did it all the time to tables of ladies, the older the ladies the better chance I added it. Why, because in my experience they were horrible tippers. Missing out on an extra 5% was drowned out by the $2 tippers that would squat on you the entire lunch. If you are such a big tipper, just add it to the 20%. That's what I do.

You are making the old red necks cringe because I'm not worthy to them.

It took me a lot more than 160 posts to prove how much of a dumbass I can be.

You just took the express lane.

An autograt that isn't stated clearly on the menu or advised by the server is stealing in my opinion. I would scratch it out and put the total amount minus the autograt in final tally.

Tips are just that, tips. It's up the diner to decide whether to give one and how much unless the auto grat is plainly stated either in writing or by the server.

Whether you get good or bad tips is the risk of being a server. I'm a good tipper with good service and I said in another thread that I will supplement a tip when dining with someone else who is paying, if I think the tip is lame and the service warranted more, but not everyone is like me. Just the way it goes.

Had a really good server on Saturday night when I took two small people to a nice restaurant. The server might have assumed this wouldn't be a good table for him, but he was really terrific and we ordered way more than he expected as I was doing a bit of a fine dining etiquette night and having the girls taste some things. 9 year old ordered the smoked salmon app without any suggestion from me and ate nearly every bite of it. I tipped 35 % on the total amount of the bill, including tax. If I'd have gotten an autograt, I would have called the manager and raised a pretty big stink about it and the server would have been out of luck. As I said, I consider that to be stealing and I don't tolerate stealing.

I don't let much ruffle me when dining out, but stealing is an exception.
