It's gumbo. And the liquid is called juice.

Sorry to rock your world but without okra it isn't Gumbo no matter what mama told you. It's stew.

Not that there's anything wrong with that....

You can call anything you want anything you want but okra is required to technically call it Gumbo.

Sorry.

Okra in gumbo sucks. I have heard that if you dehydrate the okra before you put it in then it won't get slimy. Then it would be OK.

And another vote for juice.

And wrong board.

And GTFO out noob.

ETA: meant for the OP.

I'm trying to fathom why you wouldn't put okra in gumbo. I've got nothing

If Paul Prudhomme doesn't use okra, technically he is selling soup not gumbo.

Agreed. I don't know where this slimy business comes from concerning okra. I suppose it came from somebody's mama who didn't know how to cook.

You wrong. Of course it's gumbo without okra. In Louisiana, there are three common forms of gumbo (seafood, sausage, z'herbes). Okra is generally used in the searfood version but not the others. It can be but doesn't have to be.

Just because your "mee-maw" used okra in hers, doesn't mean its the only way to make gumbo.
