How is Athens and Nashville new in the food and music scene?

They have always been known for good food and music.

Sorry, I'm not the only one from south Louisiana that has been to Boringham.

Take it up with Gourmet Magazine then. They and a few others happen to think Bham isn't devoid of decent restaurants.

Never said that, said if you are there frequently the choices run out very quickly. The foodie population in Boringham is pretty low, I'd compare it to Davenport, Iowa.

If I am at a gathering in S.LA and I make a comment that I have developed a great recipe for catfish I can draw a crowd. In B'ham I would draw stares, "I bet the little woman would like that, she does all the cookin' while we go coon huntin'"

The "food culture" thing has been rehashed and rehashed so I'm not going to argue that point. I'd argue however that countless cities across the country that don't have a unique food culture still have many good restaurants. There are far more cities without a unique food culture than with one. You're just spoiled to be in one of the better or more unique ones. That's no reason to be an arrogant ahole about other areas though.

Even if you're trying to be cute and funny this is ridiculous coming from someone from South Louisiana and all the backwoods critter hunters down there. There is more money and sophistication in metro Bham that all of Louisiana other than certain areas of New Orleans.

I've never ever heard Bham locals argue that it was. I just saw an interesting article which happened to feature Lafayette and other cities (Birmingham included) as up and coming cities for the criteria listed. Didn't realize that the mere mention of Birmingham was going to set people off but I should have known better.

As I have only lived in 3 cities in my life for decent periods of time and the except you quoted mentioned one of the cities I had lived in, I felt I should voice my opinion on disagreement.

I grew up and currently live in NOLA
Lived in Birmingham from mid 2000- mid 2006
Lived in Baton Rouge from mid 2006- mid 2009

Birmingham, while it had some good food in it, was a far cry from a food city IMO. Yes, I am biased as I grew up and live in NOLA, but I am allowed to have my opinion.

There are restaurants in Birmingham that I wish were in NOLA, however.

You're not eating at the right places. It's not NYC, Vegas, Chicago, etc., but there are alot of great places.
