French Quarter is not really my thing but have some cousins visiting from the east coast and they have never been to New Orleans or Louisiana for that matter and are big time foodies who also enjoy drinking.

Appreciate any guidance provided on where they can dine or have a good time. They have mentioned Commander's Palace based on some reading they did but am open to any and all suggestions, fancy or hoke in the wall ... only requirement is great food and alcohol

Thanks

Well, Commander's is not in the French Quarter, FYI. Commander's is great in terms of atmosphere and service. Note they have a dress code: no shorts, collars on shirts, strong preference against jeans.

Galatoire's is a REALLY fun time and an old school upscale NOLA place in the FQ. They also have a dress code, sports coats are required for men, but they do give loaners.

R'evolution just reopened and is one of the best restaurants in New Orleans.

Justine has a pretty lively atmosphere and is popular, I think the food is only so-so at best.

Coop's Place does cajun food decently in a very very very casual setting.

GW Fins is popular on this board for upscale seafood.

Killer Poboys for unique poboys.

Mr. B's is always solid

Jewel of the South for very high end cocktails with small plates

Need more context but doesn’t sound like we are dealing with foodies here.

I highly agree on going to Galatoire's and try to get a table in the main dining room. A long lunch at Galatoire's is like attending a party with your own table, particularly on Fridays. I don't like to order the entire meal all at once. Spread it out. App, drinks, salad, drinks, entree, drinks, dessert, drinks.... It's a great place for those who have never been to New Orleans. Great food, great old New Orleans festive atmosphere and great drinks.

Here's a link to the FAQs on dress etc... No coats required at lunch before 5 pm.

If they want to try Commander's as well, there's a jazz brunch at lunch on Saturdays and Sundays they might enjoy.

IMHO, hard to beat Tableau for dinner/drinks. I like Mr B’s Bistro for lunch…

Since covid the dress codes are not enforced
We've ate at Galatoires and Commanders recently and as long as you are reasonably dressed they will let you in

I wore jeans and no coat to Commanders and they were ok with it
As long as you are not in shorts and tshirts they are good

Galatoires let us in and sat us in the back area since it was a last minute walk up and they had availability (we didn't have reservations, it was spur of the moment), they weren't turning away our business

They are to a certain degree. Commander's was lax during covid but that isn't the case as much now.

You haven't been required to wear a coat to CP in a long time, and jeans are not technically restricted, just very frowned upon

Cafe Amalie is gem for sure. Women LOVE that place.

Sylvain is always good.

Justine is a beautiful spot, I like the rustic French cuisine.

I really enjoy going here. Then across the street to Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone for some drinks. There's so many good places to go in the FQ its not an easy choice.

Yeah Justine is definitely a style over substance place.

Beautiful restaurant, fun atmosphere, extremely mediocre food for such a good chef.

The first review on Yelp shows a photo from Oct 14th…and the fries look killer.

ETA: all the food looks good on there…

Those deviled eggs piss me off, but that’s the only I’ve ordered there that I was upset with.

They used to stack the fries on top the mussels and that presentation irked me…but the pictures now show them separate.

The au poivre sauce with the burger used to be an $8 add on.

Come to think of it, lots of stuff kind of pissed me off (from the host setup with DJ table right there, to the sommelier for a bottom tier wine) …but they’ve addressed everything but that shitty deviled egg.

I think the best bar in the world is Molly’s at the Market (Bloody Mary is unique, frozen Irish coffee).. Old Absinthe House…Napoleon House. Music at One Eyed Jacks.

We like Mr. B or Rib Room for brunch. The best little hole in the wall was Grape Vine. Twice a day they have wine specials which the wife took advantage of, but it's been 3 years since we have been. The food there was great.
