Hello,

Long time creeper on the forum, just have not been posting. I figure this is a good way to start.

Headed to Austin soon and wanted some food and drink recommendations? Anything is helpful.

Thanks!

What part of town? Will you have a car?

I'm staying on S. Lamar. I'm in the thick of things.

Yes, I will have a car.

I used to live and work in that area. Parts of it are walkable, depending on exactly where you're staying.

Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ on Manchaca. Easy drive from S. Lamar and the brisket tacos are AMAZING. Get the Vaquero if they have it on special.

If you're into craft beer, Pinthouse Pizza is at S. Lamar and 360, and has the Electric Jellyfish IPA, which is the best-seller in the Austin area. Right off of Lamar on Oltorf is the ABGB, which is craft beer and pizza. They specialize in pilsners and the food is amazing. They won Best Brewpub in America in 2016. Look for a fiery redhead named Roxanne, she's the BEST.

Matt's El Rancho is an institution, and while it may not be the greatest overall Tex-Mex you've ever had, it's worth a visit for the Bob Armstrong dip.

The Eberly is BEAUTIFUL, and while I've only eaten off the bar menu, everything was executed really well. It's a nicer, more expensive spot, and there's a secret, speakeasy-type bar in the back.

The Golden Goose took over what was once arguably the best dive bar in the city (the Horseshoe Lounge), and while it's not as awesome as it used to be, it's still got a fun vibe.

The Black Sheep Lodge is a sports bar with a covered patio and shuffleboard. They also have one of my favorite burgers and I love their wings.

I've been gone for about 8 months and Austin changes so fast that it's entirely possible that there is more or less to do on that particular corridor, but that area has blown up in the last few years so even if you don't drive anywhere there is no shortage of places to go.

L Boogie made good recommendations. I second Valentina’s. The wait isn’t too bad and it’s some of the best bbq in a town full of amazing bbq places.

Also try:

Curras for interior Mexican.

Easy Tiger if you are on 6th and want a chill place that has good beer and food.

Draught House pub is a cool neighborhood pub if you want to hang with locals. Lots of beers on tap and they brew their own.

Torchy’s or Tacodeli for good tacos. If you go to torchys, you must get the queso.

Lambert’s - upscale bbq downtown. They also have live music upstairs most nights.

ABGB and Pinthouse both have great pizza. I give ABGB an edge on pizza but Pinthouse has better beer. ABGB is a more interesting place and it has live music acts often. Parking sucks there.

Peche (not related to NOLA Peche) does a really good Old Fashioned. This is more of a fine dining place, but you can just go their for drinks. They have a lot of good cocktails.

Elephant Room is an awesome underground Jazz bar with good beer selection. No cover on weekdays usually and small cover on weekends ($5-10).

Texas Chili Parlor is a very old dive near the capital. Very good chili if you are in the mood and its not too hot.

Ramen Tatsu-Ya - I've heard good things about this place but haven't been.

Uchi - This place is on S. Lamar. Don't bother getting sushi here, as there are better places to get this in Austin. But their small plates are awesome. Get the brussel sprouts side if they have them.

Takoba - Modern Mexican - very good. Their Al Pastor torta is awesome.

Buenos Aires - Argentinian food

I'd hold off on visiting for the moment, but when the coast is clear, the best hangover cure I've ever had was a lunch at Curra's with an avocado margarita.

Second the Lambert’s recommendation. Was only in town for a long weeeknd with a lot of work responsibilities but had a really good meal with a large crowd there. And the upstairs was cool.

Oooh, also Habanero's, which is off of Oltorf. They have amazing, cheap Tex-Mex. Cash only, but there is an ATM on site just in case.

if you want to waste your entire vacation standing in a line.

It's definitely good but it's not stand-in-line-on-the-outside-chance-that-you're-not-getting-fed-at-all good.

It's Austin. There are PLENTY of great BBQ places that won't run out of food before you're able to eat.

I was thinking about Otoko on S. Congress. I've been to Uchi in Houston already, and it was great, but wanted to try something new

Skip Franklins and go to Louie Muellars in Taylor, Texas where Aaron Franklin learned to cook BBQ. Just north of Round Rock. You will be back on 6th Street on your second beer before you finish at Franklins.

If you want a small plates place, try barley swine. Some of the best food I’ve ever had was there.

Beef rib at Terry Black’s was the best thing I ate.

I thought Stiles Switch was overrated, and didn’t care for Texas Chili Parlors chili. Torchys was ok. Hopdoddy burgers were pretty good.
