What portions do you use, vodka brand, vermouth brand?

I drink the shite out of vodka martinis but they never come out worth a frick when I make them at home.

Been pouring like 3 shots of goose
A tiny splash of vermouth (I don't have the dry, I bought the only one local store had at time)
About a 1/4 shot of olive brine

Shake the shite out of it with ice in shaker
Serve it up

Well! I'm a gin guy, but that notwithstanding, use a good vermouth (like Dolin). Makes a big difference.

Hate to break this to you, but if that is the vermouth you have been using, its the wrong kind. That is sweet vermouth. You want a dry vermouth for a martini (which is made with gin).

Try and find some citrus bitters in lieu of that awful olive juice you have.

I drink only gin martinis but I coat a cold martini glass in DRY vermouth (swish a little and pour out.. Don't fight to shake every single drop out.. A miniscule amount of collection in the glass is okay). Shake gin, splash olive juice, and tons of ice until my hands can't handle the cold of the shaker. Strain. Enjoy.

I don't stir. Deal with it.

^^^^^^
What he said. I can't imagine a martini with sweet vermouth.
If you insist on vodka as opposed to proper gin, here's how I made mine before I became "enlightened "

3 oz Tito's
Capful Dolin/Cinzano/Boissiere DRY vermouth
Capful olive juice (Zatarain's is best)

Stir with ice do not shake. Strain into cocktail glass

1) don't use vodka. That's not a martini.
2) fill a glass with very cold gin (stirred, of course) and wave it in the direction of Italy

Dolin makes both dry and sweet. Get the dry for a martini.

Well since you arent making a martini and mixing a base spirit with a juice, shaking is actually preferable. So good job.

I'm not a bartender.

I bought the only vermouth at rouses that day.
Googled a quick recipe and mafe a few.
I love vodka, but absolutely love dirty vodka martinis.

I appreciate the help.

Will definitely chunk it and buy some dry vermouth.

You don't have to be a bartender to make a great martini at home. Just get the best ingredients you can. Experiment with the amount of vermouth and olive juice. Shake if you like- only difference is that it makes it cloudy. If it makes you happy do it. Stirred is classic but shaken works.
Good Luck. Then do it right and use a proper GIN.

I hear ya. I'll definitely play around with it.

I knew something was not right with the vermouth i was using.
Wasn't as good as when I order in a restaurant or bar.

Will also try gin.
