AUSTIN, Texas -- The Austin Fire Department said a fire at Franklin Barbecue in Austin is under control and that no one was hurt.

Just after 5:30 a.m., Austin Fire tweeted that the second floor of the restaurant, was heavily-involved and that crews were going defensive.

A photo shared with Spectrum News by Joseph Lai showed heavy fire coming from the roof of the popular Austin eatery, located at 900 E 11th Street.

About six fire units responded to the call.

At 6:06 a.m., crews tweeted that the fire was under control.

The fire occrred in the pit area of the business, which is separated from the restaurant area.

Austin Fire said one barbecue cook was working at the time of the fire and was able to escape the flames.

Four of the seven smokers were in use when the fire broke out.

Fire officials said the cook had been working since midnight.

Aaron Franklin, the owner of the restaurant, is at the scene.

Update:

The Austin Fire Department put out the flames at 6:05 a.m. They reported that there is smoke damage, but the restaurant is okay. Austin 360 noted:

The room that houses the pits suffered “heavy damage” but firefighters were able to contain the fire, resulting only in smoke damage to the dining room and public portion of the restaurant.

Difficult news for Mr. Franklin. Never had his BBQ, but enjoyed his TV show on ETV here. Hopefully he has insurance and can come back quickly.

Has to be a smoky meat joke here, but seems really inappropriate.

Wouldn't doubt it if he isn't self-insured by now.

Pic from the Austin subreddit. Sad to see this. LINK

I'll ask because I know everyone else is wondering… how long did the firefighters have to wait in line?

Tweeting play by play? My sister in law must have been there.
