What are some home run dishes served up at Tsunami that the F&Ders recommends?

I'm often drawn to unique rolls or appetizers.

Tend to stay away from dishes I can get anywhere. So hold off on nigiri and sashimi recommendations and hold back on anything with cream cheese. Also, edamame is not for me.

The eggplant miso seems interesting. Worth a try? Or likely to disappoint? If it's like shrimp toast with eggplant instead of bread, I'm in. If it's just two separate tempura items with a dipping sauce, I'm out.

One of my favorite dishes of all time is a hard to find roll called Art of Maki. It's typically very thinly sliced tuna wrapped around crabmeat, avocado and sprouts. Variations include shrimp and other unique sauces.

Some of their entrees seen interesting. Are either of these worth making it my primary meal for my first visit?

Sumo Ribeye
24 oz bone in Allen Brothers beef grilled to your delight, served w/asparagus and ginger caramelized onion butter

Any unique desserts?

Any unique non-citrus cocktails?

I think that ribeye is something like $75, but apparently it's great.

If you get that, snap a pic and report back

Eggplant miso is good. Think cubed pan fried eggplant tossed in a thick miso based sauce. Very good as an app because it takes no effort to eat. The entire table can reach over with chopsticks and pick up a small cube.

I generally get nigiri or ask the chef to make me an off menu chirashi bowl, so I'll avoid entree reqs.

As for the dessert, Tsinful Chocolate Tsunami or bust.

ETA: What kind of cocktails are you into? If I'm looking for something low key, I'll do a Japanese Magnolia which is sake and plum wine. A little on the sweeter side, but not cloyingly so. I find it refreshing.

At home, I go for whiskey cocktails, with occasional gin.

But when dining at restaurants I prefer to go outside my comfort zone. So at Tsunami, I would want to try something uniquely Japanese with anything but citrus being on the table.

Tell the waiter to let the sushi chefs create their own rolls for you off the menu

It's my favorite item at Tsunami.

I generally drink a bunch of sake at Tsunami. Fairly decent selection. Either imbibe in some cheap hot sake, or explore some cold sakes. If my memory serves me, they have a pretty decent deal on a four sake flight.

Ooo, make sure you ask them to keep your lava cake on the undercooked side. I can't speak to the Lafayette location recently, but the Baton Rouge location cooks it all the way through almost as a rule. Pretty much ruins it.
