Sour Grapes is a fantastic documentary.

So many hilarious moments with wine collectors being told their alleged 64' clos de blah blah is not really that.

Love the guy who says "I only drink Krug, if I can't drink Krug, drink Coors Light" or something like that.

Part marketing park quality

Like I can Tell the difference between Belle Glos andnits cheaper cousins Meiomi and Elouan

But is it a 30 dollar difference?

That may be actually more involved with the production than the marketing.

Elouan and Meiomi are locally sourced but not from a single vineyard. Which usually is more labor intensive.

Meiomi is no longer associated with Belle Glos. Belle Glos sold it off and it's its own entity now.

What made Meiomi such a hit was Belle Glos made their more expensive 3 single vineyard wines. Throughout the process, if a barrel didn't quite cut the quality to be a single vineyard, it was blended along with similar barrels from the other vineyards and sold as Meiomi. Same grapes, same attention to detail, just not quite enough to be "Clark & Telephone", "Los Alturas" or "Dairyman"

The average consumer will pretend they know what good wine tastes like, but most bottles $10-50ish need a story or an attitude or a glamour lifestyle or a pretty label to sell, especially on the domestic side

I'm aware. We used to sell Ehlers 1886 frequently purely because all the profits went to cardiovascular research and if you turn the bottle 90 degrees the E becomes a heart.

Yea, that didn't become popular until after I got out of the business. If it helps sell, I say have at it, but it's basically a newer version of the Grey Goose business model.

I can't really tell the difference between a $15 bottle and a $50 one.

At the winery you can easily taste the difference. Once it’s been sitting on a hot truck being shaken to death, the wine losses some of its magic.

Also, once you learn the difference, certain cheap wines are ruined forever.

I wouldn't call any of them "great" but they are well known and are drinkable plus they look good as a party favor. I wouldn't order it at a restaurant unless it's all they had.

Agreed. Seasmoke is good stuff. I also like some of the Kosta Browns too.

When it comes to pinot, I like old world style. Most of the Cali stuff I can pass on.

High quality producers are not marketing like the low quality ones are.

The mass produced consumer wines like barefoot, yellowtail, Sutter home, Woodbridge, et al are spending millions and millions on marketing. More than anyone else. No high quality producer $100+ is spending that kind of money on marketing.

You and I can't even tour Sassicaia and do a tasting. We could at Ornellaia but tasting there start at 85 euro and have to be booked months in advance.

The best thing I can suggest to people that don't get wine is to do a vertical tasting. Then you can actually taste and see the changes in that particular wine as it ages. Drinking a great wine in its prime is a great experience.
