Damn Paul. I am so sorry for your loss.

I don't mind sharing. My mother and sister were in an auto accident on Tuesday. My sister broke the C2 vertabrae in here neck, and my mother has a broken sternum.

My mother went home the next day, but started throwing up, which is extremely painful, as you might imagine, and she had to go back into the hospital today. They believe she is just dehydrated, and are going to keep her in the hospital for observation and for some more tests to make sure there isn't something else going on.

My sister's broken neck did not damage her spinal cord, which is incredibly fortunate, because damage to that C2 vertabrae is usually fatal, or at least leads to paralysis from the neck down. As it turns out, she won't even require surgery, and went home from the hospital today.

So they are very fortunate, and hopefully neither one of them has any long term issues.

My daughter just finished her first round of chemotherapy for treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma. Her prognosis is also very good.

I think we can all agree. frick cancer.

The sad thing about this is that it could have been easily avoided. The accident occured because there was a truck with a flatbed trailer jackknifed on a 2 lane country road. A farmer with no license to drive a commercial truck tried to turn left out of a driveway onto the road and didn't make the turn. He was trying to back up to make the turn, and ended up jackknifing the trailer on the road. The trailer had no lights or reflectors.

My sister and Mom didn't see the trailer, because the trailer had no lights and the cab of the truck was in the oncoming lane and they were blinded by the lights. They ran into the back end of the trailer and went off the road. The passenger side of their car was trapped against the side of a tree, so my sister (with her broken neck) pulled my mother out of the car, and then proceeded to pass out in the middle of the road.

The driver of the truck was unharmed, but refused to get out of his truck to help. A couple of minutes later, another car came along and almost ran into the trailer, as well (almost ran over my sister in the process). The people in that car called 911 and the police arrived 10 minutes later, followed by an ambulance. The driver never got out of his truck until the police arrived.

It'll be me +1; my best friend is my travel partner. Just figuring out if there is going to be two more.
