Central Carrollton. I'm next to Panola Street Cafe, if you know where that is.

Whenever I've gone during the day its been just like Bruno's has always been, a bunch of old people. Its a local bar by day and a Tulane hang out by night. I wouldn't want to be there after like 4 probably, but if you are just looking to chill during the middle of the day...seems fine to me.

Let me just continue this off-topic conversation since we're on it. Has anyone used anyhing other than craigslist/padmapper for apartment searching? I looked on nola.com once but its predictably a mess and it seemed like most were cross-posted anyway. Or anyone ever use a realtor? I used one in Houston and it worked out fine, wondering if they know of any other listings here maybe.

I have used a realtor when I moved to Nola. For $800, I got a 600 sq ft apt on St. Charles ( here). It wasn't bad and was awesome during Mardi Gras.
KFizz, my advice is do to what I did after that: take some time and pick an area you want to live in and drive around looking for apartments. You'll get a feel for what the neighborhood is like and find options that aren't posted on CL or Realtor websites as they would have to rent the apt to the first person that submits the deposit. So by not posting it on the web or CL, they can pick and choose who to rent to. Using an agent made it easier, but I didn't get as much bang for the buck.
Just MO

Ya. So now I just look for the yard with the flamingo and find that cat that knows how to work the beer taps.

Cabana Club..... Spent all my childhood Mardi Gras Days there.

I got mine through CL, but got pretty lucky. I happened to be around the corner on a job and caught the listing within 5 minutes of it being posted. By the time I got to the house an hour later someone else was already there, but he didn't have his checkbook and I did, so I won out.
It's tough to go th CL route. The good places posted on CL go literally within minutes. Best bet is to know someone on the ground here. I didn't really know too many people that well to look for me. I called a few realtors, but they weren't much help and pretty much referred me back to CL.

After you find those two things, knock on the door and let's have a beer.

You can find 1 bedrooms downtown for $1000-1300, and lower in the GD or Uptown. I used to live in a house uptown (3 bedroom) and paid $600 + utilities. My 1 bedroom now is $1250 downtown.
Tracey's gets nmy vote for daytime drinking uptown.
eta: I know the one bedrooms in my building start at like $950, but they're round 550 sq ft.

Cabana Club was where it was at. I was the youngest occupant by 50 years.

This is what I'd normally do, but I already know the areas that I want to live in like the back of my hand. Unfortunately the other half of that (driving around and such), while definitely a great course of action, I just don't have a heck of a lot of time at the moment to do so. Maybe once I get some things ironed out I can start doing that though. Appreciate the info.

Fortunately I know half the city so that's not an issue. I haven't started looking seriously, just getting a feel for a possible move.

Just make sure you knock on the correct door. You don't want to knock on Big Booty Judy's door. You won't make it out in under an two hours and without a bowl of chitlin and pig-feet gumbo.

Where do you want to live?
I have a friend that does real estate that would be happy to help if it's in the downtown area. she could probably put you in touch with someone in other areas of the city

Same here. I've been in Atlanta the last 2 years but would really like to be in New Orleans within the next year or so.
I appreciate everyone's insight on the rent situation in the area. It seems a bit pricier than Atlanta, but the premium is warranted if you consider the ability to actually live within walking distance of these places.
