I really don't understand why they are looked down upon by some in the craft beer scene,

It's more of a thing where there are a lot of other breweries that people look up to, and knowing Abita's resources, would like them to be one of them.

i had my graham cracker porter that i made with zappas light night

bottled it about 4 weeks ago

can honestly say that Abita has better offerings

waaaaaaay too much graham extract. tried steeping a whole bunch of the crackers to add to the boil, but got no impact. Hoping to give it several more months to mellow out

True, they don't make extreme beers, but I'm not in the mood for extreme beers all the time.

Extreme beers? Making a quality ale is not extreme, it's the norm, unless you are a BMC wannabe.

As for my favorites by them, in no order:

Pecan Harvest
Christmas Ale
Turbodog
Red Ale
Abbey Ale

Pecan Harvest is probably one of the worst beers i've ever had. I bought a 6 pack last year. Drank a few sips of one, threw the rest down the drain and tried to give away the rest. I managed to give away 3 and had to throw away the rest.

Extracts are easy to over do.

That sucks too because that sounds like a good idea.

What about adding to secondary? Seems like you get more flavor from the secondary, however you do have the risk of infection.

Since many people like it, I would not call it "one of the worst...."

With that said, I disliked it as much as you.

Just kegged a berry blonde ale and know the feeling of way too much ingredients. The last fruit beer I did, I added five pounds of strawberries to the secondary and it came out just right. This time I did five pounds of black, blue and raspberries and it was wayyyyyyy too much. The beer looks like Hawaiian Punch. The wife will still drink it though since she likes more of a wine cooler type drink anyways.

It's a food and drink board and people are passionate about beer.

it happens all the time

somebody asks for the board's thoughts on some popular product, some people mention that it sucks, or it is not that great, then the people who like get really insecure and start calling everyone snobs or prententious

I'm just glad that - unless I missed it - no one has declared Satsuma Wit to be their favorite.

Apparently Fat Tire has the same effect in parts of the country that are graced by its presence.

I don't care for it at all.
I cracked up at the number of people I know who purchased that crap thinking it was going to be orange flavored and sweet like the strawberry beer.

Another decent beer that people think is fantastic simply because it is not available.

Except that New Belgium will think outside of the box and make a lot of different styles.

Cough cough Cocoa Mole Cough Cough La Folie..

Hell I've probably had more or just as many Lips of faith beers from New Belgium as I've had Abita Selects.

Couldn't even get Abita select at the Chimes or Bulldog for a while.
