Recently I've seen ads for a bunch of different upper-end steak house branded knives. Ruths, Smith & Wollensky, etc...

Is this just a gimmick or is there something worth buying here?

Gimmick

Probably decent knives but you could get the same knife without the steakhouse stamp for prob 50% less

Think my steak knives are a set i got from costco for like $30. They work great.

Gimmick. They aren't using any special steel or construction methods to make them better or worse than other comparable steak knives. I typically prefer a fine edge to serrated for steak knives but using a cutco serrated steak knife has me rethinking this. It was very ergonomic, I like the shape of the blade and it was as sharp as a scalpel.

Edit: The cutco knife I used is called a table knife, not a steak knife

I will admit that I have a whole box of steak knives from all over the world. It has been a thing of mine for years. I even have friends around the country and in other countries that will mail ones to me.

99% of them were obtained by quietly asking my server to drop one in the Go Box and then tipping generously. A couple may or may not have fallen into the bag after multiple bottles of wine. I am not proud of it.

It is kind of fun to pull the box out when having guests over and letting people choose their knife from the variety.

Probably the best story was walking through London and riding the Tube with a really hefty knife in a bag and only realizing later that it is a serious felony offense there to do that.

If you have kids you’ve eaten plenty of outback. Those wooden handle steak knives are nice LOL. Many made their way into to the doggie bags and are still in frequent use decades later
