I don't think I've ever seen beans roasted that dark. How were they?

Turin SK40 Grinder or SD40 V2? Looks like the SK40 is better?
Posted on 1/9/24 at 6:21 pm to BigPerm30
I’d go SK40 because it’s stepless. Can get infinite adjustments to dial in a shot.

That’s what I thought as well. I think I’m going with that and the Turin Espresso machine.

From the Turin website:

Jan 9 Update: Container is at trainyard 30 miles from our warehouse, x-ray scan was done and waiting for clearance confirmation.
You can be like a pioneer if you get one from the first shipping container. Kind of exciting.

Nice. If you haven’t ordered yet, check with Espresso Outlet to see when your order would be expected to arrive. Not sure if they sold all of the first shipment. Would suck to order then have to wait months for it.

Yeah, kind of worried about that. I may give them a call tomorrow.

Do yourself a favor and get something with an E61 group.
Its the difference between it lasting 2-3 years and 10 years.
Also, your water will make a big difference in the longevity of any espresso machine. Scale is a killer.
I use a flojet with bottled water.

Jura
I second Jura for super automatic. The Z10 was our COVID/WFH purchase. We never use any of the milk features and in hindsight would have gotten a cheaper model. They have some ~$1000 if you just want it to make espresso. If you create an account on their online store, I think they send you a discount code about a week later.

I bought the Turin Legato and SK40 grinder. I’m not OT baller with the $5k setup. Mrs Perm didn’t want to use it so I opted for a traditional machine/grinder setup.

I look forward to hearing about your impressions of the machine. It’s priced like a Gaggia but has more features. Very interested.

Or just get a water filter, even one of those fridge pitchers with a gravity water filter is fine.

yeah doing some research is how I found out you can use a grill. High temp is the key.
For years I used a hot air popcorn popper. You want one with the jets on the side which swirl the beans as the air passes over it. I never take good coffee beans to the 2nd crack but I sacrifice the first load to the french roast gods to measure the time it takes to go from the first crack to the 2nd crack. Then experiment within that spectrum how far between the two I like the particular coffee bean roasted. Takes about 5-10 minutes to do a ~3oz batch in a hot air popper. Not sure if the white balance is off in your picture but those beans looked burned to me. Now roast profile overpowers the bean flavor profile. I've always wanted something to do larger batches of coffee but those drum roasters are pricey.

FYI, my Legato shipped out. Supposed to get here next Tuesday. Any word on yours?
Posted on 1/20/24 at 7:19 pm to jordan21210
I just went to their site and it says “TURIN LEGATO IS NOW IN STOCK!”
Had a brother in law over today for coffee. He wants a machine but doesn’t want to pay what I paid. Looking forward to your reporting.

Should be here tomorrow but might not have time to mess with it for a day or two.
A pretty thorough review just dropped on YouTube yesterday. Consensus is: it’s a really good machine at the price, the preinfusion kind of sucks and isn’t really preinfusion, build quality is OK, seems built to last but only time will tell, needs an OPV, has potential for flow control but will need some after-market modding.
