This. Follow the lead of the boss. Great advice earlier on saying "water for now while I look at the menu," especially if you're asked to order drinks first by the server, which can be awkward.

Or you can show some initiative and pretend to be a grown arse adult and order yourself a drink when asked.

I just plop down and ask 'is this a drinkin meetin" if they say yeah, I drink.

Generally wine is my go to, I save a bourbon for after dinner. Just never take the first pour or the last.

A cocktail glass is not brought to the dinner table because water and several wines are served with a multi-course meal. Leave the cocktail glass in the bar or room where cocktails are taken.

I don't think some of yall dine out in New Orleans often. LOL

I know a ton of people who start with a cocktail just after siting down and before opening a menu.
Craft cocktails are the craze all over, even at many nice restaurants.
I'm pretty traditional and like to start with a old fashion or something along those lines

The proper way of drinking and eating in a restaurant etiquette by a wine guy: however the hell you want. You want beer, wine, cocktail, scotch....I don't care. What makes you happy. You want to order an entree and go to appetizers the dessert or flip it around completely, be my guest. The most fun I have at restaurants is when I'm alone and i do whatever I feel like in terms of food and beverages. And to be honest, the money you're spending is the reason everyone is in business in the end...making great food and understanding pairings are a plus, but some people don't want that, and that's ok.

And another thing.....red wine and red meat are what you're taught. I promise you I can pair white wine with a steak....I promise I could pair red wine with fish. And I promise you, I'm going to ultimately drink what I'm in the mood for because my meal will be a lot more enjoyable that way as well....just for reference I'm also a cocktail person at dinner. I drink too much wine for a living, the last thing I want when I'm relaxing over a midweek dinner is to be thinking about the grapes, region, type of oak, alcohol levels, acidity, age, and all the other stuff that comes along with being an ocd sommelier.

Yeah, just do what you want. Order dessert first, get your steak well done with ketchup, drink half a dozen currz lites. Who cares what an authority figure that could potentially promote you thinks about you.

Just drink what you want.

That's my opinion as well.

Do you really think the etiquette standard was written in New Orleans or that the world looks to New Orleans for guidance on eating and drinking table etiquette?

Generally my strategy at a nicer dinner as well. Cocktail of some variety (I prefer old fashioned or a sazerac) to open the evening and sip on while reading the menu and waiting for the first course. Then wine with the meal. Finish with coffee, scotch, port, or your choice of digestif. Cheers
