Why in the world would someone else's attire bother you or affect your dining experience? I'd probably look at the guy, say "look at this schmuck," and then his attire wouldn't have any effect on the rest of my meal.
Does it bother you that I take my coat off as soon as I get to the table?

If it's one schumuck, I completely agree.
I think the problem lies when the schmucks start taking over places, which were previously considered fine dining/special occasion type restaurants, and completely altering the feel of the place.
I also agree with others that the place is usually as much to blame as the schmucks dining there.
Irenes is a good example of a place that has jumped the shark for me, in this regard.

Personally, I enjoy dolling up to go out.

even lunch at Commander's is awful. Hard to feel like a special meal when there are kids in shredded jeans and flip flops and whales in Nebraska football shirts sitting next to you.
the food and service was still great, but it definitely cheapens the feel/experience.

Exactly
Also if its one person, he is the one who looks out of place...it is sad when you dress up and look out of place at a nice restaurant.

They must have really changed the rules there then. I worked there ~00-01 and they had a mandatory coat rule. I've even seen them turn away people when they house was out of extra coats, granted this was for dinner.
But I still don't get why it pisses you off. I have never and will never go to a restaurant for ambiance. Maybe I'm the odd man out, but I only care about great food, not atmosphere.

but you probably clean up better than us turds.
i hate dressing up, but i will do it for a really nice place out of respect for the meal/establishment. And damnit, if i dresed up for this every other bastard in the place better have to as well.

where did anyone say they aren't going to places b/c of other people's attire? i greatly prefer places where the focus is on food, not other shite.
and yes, lunch is not the same as dinner at Commander's.

Agreed...nothing wrong if a place chooses to focus on both and do both well.

Maybe I should've said that I will never not go to a place because of ambiance. Who cares what other people are wearing? Why does this affect your experience if the food was still great? As long as the food/service is awesome wrt the $, I'm good.

b/c when i am snot slinging drunk from .25 martinis and wearing a dress shirt, i prefer to be able to stare at well dressed, fit women in sundresses....not pasty thighed beasts that love kettle corn, early kickoffs, and fanny packs.

Of course good food is the primary concern, but come on... ambiance and setting play a huge role in picking a place to eat. (For me at least)

Kettle corn is the shite, don't hate.
I know Tiger Attorney would be all over this thread before I even opened it, but I'm kinda surprised that so many others agree. oh well.

Saw a guy in jeans and a polo shirt in Commander's at lunch a few weeks ago. Took everything in me to keep from jumping from the table and fleeing the restaurant, even though the jeans disappeared under the table after he sat down. I could still see the edges of them when, against my better judgment, I checked out what shoes he had on and I got a little dizzy from leaning over to do that. Caught that glimpse just as I was about to take the first bite of my appetizer (while somewhat upside down). Thought I was going to barf as the feeling of cheapness and nausea overtook my body. Had to chug my Ramos Gin Fizz down pronto. I managed to stay until completing my dessert, but it was hell, I tell ya. Just hell. I'm now under psychiatric care for post traumatic stress syndrome. My therapist and I are trying work me up to being able to dine out again, but I'm not sure I can do it. We're starting with drive up windows. I was completely traumatized. Didn't seem to bother anyone else at my table or at the surrounding tables, surprisingly. They were too busy chatting with each other and enjoying their fine meals to notice the guy with bare arms and blue jean legs. Pray for me.

I do too, but as I said, inevitably I always end up at some place like Tip's wearing slacks and a button up and surrounded by a bunch of hippies in T-shirts and raggaed jeans. Then I get mistaken for a waiter or something.

About 30 years ago I visited my old home town of New Iberia. I heard they had a new fancy fine dining restaurant owned by someone I dimly knew.
Me and my old HS friends from NISH decided to try it out. We were dressed in dress pants, dress shirts and belts. No jacket or ties. We were stopped at the door and not allowed in.
As we went to another place I remarked "this place will be closed in a year."
I was wrong. It shut down 2 months later.
