Looking to take a trip up to Door County in early summer. Will be taking my elderly parents, so we would like to be near a town with good restaurants and scenery that is easy to get to - hikes and boating are out.

Any suggestions?

Also open to other towns areas in the Great Lakes area within 4-5 hours drive of Indianapolis. We don't want a big city, but more of a quaint, small town getaway, preferrably on the water with good restaurants and scenery. Put In Bay? Indiana Dunes? Any other suggestions?

I go to Milwaukee a lot but I've never been to Door County. I talked to a few buddies that have camps/cottages up there and said you need to try a fish boil (mostly on Fridays, various locations - Log Den, Old Post Office, Viking Gril) and Al Johnson’s. They said they have goats on the roof of the restaurant (Al Johnsons). I think I've seen an episode of DDD where they visited that place.

As said here, fish boils are the big thing. But if you’re used to eating fish prepared in the south, be prepared to not enjoy it. It’s exactly as it sounds.

That being said, Door County is a beautiful place to visit.

I am very familiar with Door County, I have family that live out in Washington Island. Sister Bay is typically where I try and stay. As someone else mentioned Al Johnsons is in sister bay which is where the goats are on the roof. Fish Creek is another nice area, Pelletier's is over there and has a solid fish boil.

-Day trip to washington island
-Go out on a boat
-Dinner at a fish boil
-Visit the different towns
-The golf is also pretty solid up there

It gets quite crowded during the summer just fyi.

Door County would be my #1 choice for lake michigan but some other very nice areas: grand beach/new buffalo, mackinac island.

Can't say I'm looking forward to a fish boil...

I'll try anything once. Because my Dad has arthritis in both knees, we won't be walking far. Mostly drive, get out enjoy the food and scenery. So scenic towns are what we need. Sister's Bay sounds good.

Yeah it's very nice up there, a lot of good airbnb options. If you go to Washington Island check out Red Cup Coffee, it's my wifes' families coffee shop.

The fish boil is fun to watch the explosion and learn the history of the area but the food isn't anything crazy. Most places have ribs/chicken tho if you don't want whitefish.

Door County Brewing is a fun spot, they have live music most nights.

The outdoor bar at Al Johnsons is a great place to watch any Wisconsin/GB game. I caught WI/UM a few years back and it was wild.

Fish boils are very popular in Door County, but most of the state is into the Friday Fish Fry. Both are a delight.

Anyway, north of Sturgeon Bay, my favorite towns to visit are Sister Bay, Egg Harbor and Bailey's Harbor.

ETA: If I were you, I'd look at making accommodations now.

We went to Door County when we went to the LSU/WI game in 2016. We stayed in Green Bay and just drove up for the day and we mostly just drove around and stopped at a few places.

A friend had recommended the cherry stuffed French toast at The White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. I had started eating before I took the picture. They grow a lot of cherries there and we were told they pick them over a two week period during the summer; around June I think

The inn rents rooms but it is old, est. in 1896, and may not have an elevator. I believe they have the fish boil several nights a week but it did not appeal to us. As I recall Fish Creek had a small shopping area that is walkable.

Nearby is Peninsula State Park and we mostly just drove around there. We did stop to see the lighthouse and it was a short walk from the parking lot.

I don't remember if we went inside. Being a lighthouse it is on the water.

Seaquist Orchards Farm Market is between Sister Bay and Ellison Bay. Definitely stop there; they have a bakery and they had the best cake-like donut I've ever had. They are next to Hwy 42; east to spot.

We also stopped by the Maritime Museum but all I remember about that is this boat. I don't know if they have a building; we didn't go in it if they did. This is some type of specialty boat they used in the lake. You can drive right up to it and read about it.

They have several food stand type places on Hwy 42 and 57 with local produces, etc. These were at one of those.

If you have time, if they are open, and if you have an interest the Packers museum at Lambeau Field is good. It requires some walking however.

You might get more responses if you post your question on the Travel Board.

Door County and/or Traverse are cool, but man that is a long haul. Consider towns much further south such as New Buffalo, South Haven, Holland, Saugatuck, Grand Haven, or Pentwater. Each of these towns is a very quaint and charming place to spend a week in the summer.

The Michigan side has far better beaches, like 100x better. Large and sandy and real. And your drive time savings are very significant, will make a diff on a long weekend.

Pic is Ludington beach.
