Nobody was hunting Dong Phuong king cakes 2-3 years ago. Sucre is what all the cool kids wanted.

As he pointed out, not everyone lives in New Orleans still. Terrible king cakes in other states can cost $15-30. It's not a stretch to pay a few extra dollars to ensure you get a great king cake straight from the source. People pay far more for shitty birthday and wedding cakes.
