Looking at the video in the link, it looks like it makes the ice and it just sits in a plastic container. I'm not sure that it'll retain that ice for long before it starts to melt. If this is a non issue, I really like the price point on that.

I heard that part. I'm just curious if there's any cooling or insulation (looks like not) for the storage portion. I'd hate to have something that is in a constant state of melting and remaking ice.

Then again, I bet that it's market is geared towards parties and not on demand ready made ice.

Cali, for the coin you'll be dropping I'd suggest adding a serious water filter to the project; one located where you can get to it for service or replacement of the filter cartridges.

That, plus rotating the ice and keeping the machine and bin clean-clean-clean, will insure non-skanky ice.

This from my experience of talking my business (not food related) into buying a big Hoshizaki commercial unit 15 years ago during a remodel. Lasted through Katrina and at last check is still chugging away.

I have a 400 lb Hoshizaki and a 200 lb Hoshizaki. One is 11 years old the other 6 and have never had a bit of trouble. Great machines. The 200 was about $2500 and the 400 about $3400. Worth every penny.

Whatever you get make sure that you have a good filter and clean it and have it serviced. I had to throw away a 4 year old hoshizaki under counter nugget maker because the previous owner of our home did not put a filter and calcium buildup just killed it. You would think someone who owns several restaurants would know better. I bought one identical to it two years ago and so far so good.

About a year ago I bought a 300 lb Hoshizaki to put in my man cave for the same price as your under counter Scott. Works great with an endless supply of ice for tailgates, fishing etc.

scotsmans are very solid as well. They tend to have less issues than other ice makers. See them a good bit in high end homes. If you must have nugget ice is a great choice. If you are fine with square ice get the Kitchen Aid.
