That’s why small to medium-small shrimp are perfect for steaming. That size really pulls away from the shell as well. Can go through a mess of them if they’ve been done well.

Boiled = no
Fried shrimp = yes because they are usually 21/25.
Smaller shrimp for things like fettuccini and gumbo = no.
Anything larger than a 36/40 count, my wife is going to devein if she is cooking.

This is the best. It works great. I don't like deveining but my wife will only eat larger shrimp that way. Its a PITA.

Worst part about deveining 2-3 lbs of shrimp at a time is the amount of pricks you get in your hands.

Do NOT serve shrimp to Yankees unless they are deveined. Worse than making them use the outhouse. Keep the flavorful natural shrimp for yourself and serve them the bleached, big, chewy, deveined crap.

Depends on the dish. Large shrimp in a Sauce Piquant…yep.

Boiled shrimp is the only shrimp that shouldn't be deveined. Any other dish and it absolutely should. Otherwise it taste like eating sand. Boiled crawfish - no devein. Any other dish deveined.

You devein shrimp and crawfish after they are boiled if you want. Fir other dishes they should be deveined ahead of time.

During shrimp baiting season in SC, the shrimp can taste like fish meal, whether you catch them or buy them locally. Deveining helps tremendously. Other than that, I don't devein.
