Dixie is back, and in a big way.

Dixie Brewing Co.'s ownership group, led by billionaire Gayle Benson, announced plans Tuesday to move ahead with opening an 80,000 square foot brewery and restaurant in New Orleans East.

The brewery will be housed within the former MacFrugal's building located on the Industrial Canal. The building has also housed a the FilmWorks New Orleans production studio.

ive enjoyed many a dixie since benson brought it back (contract brewed) with the original recipe. like it or don't, but dixie has a unique instantly recognizable flavor (i like it)

this is good news

Was that building the one that burned down in the mid 90s? If so I remember ash falling from it on us in Chalmette.

Thats the one.

I guess Crescent Crown is their distributor and this is where they plan to put the brewery for easy roll out the back door operations.

Not exactly friendly for tourists to visit.

Yeh, this seems like a horrendous location for a brewery you actually want people to visit

I would imagine they will eventually have a tap room in the quarter.

First off, regardless of where this is located it's great news for New Orleans. Job, economy, local product.

Secondly, this guy has it goin on.

They may get 1 or 2 more visitors a day than ole Cajun Fire Brewing out by Jazzland.

Horrid location for a restaurant and tap room, but that's not going to be their money maker regardless.

Hopefully it will generate some economic development in the area. The East needs all the help it can get.

He really drew the short straw. At least the other one gets to stand in the shade.

The new brewery will take over the former MacFrugal's distribution center at 3501 Jourdan Road in New Orleans East. The brewing facility will be built in an 80,000-square-foot portion of the building and, at least initially, will be able to brew about 1,000 barrels of beer a month. The plans also include a brewpub and recreational space on a green area in front of the brewery.

I feel like that's a massive space for 1K of barrels a month. I wonder if they are going to use some of the space for other Benson companies.

Location is really bad. I get wanting to invest in NO East, but there are better places in the East you could have put this, and perhaps spurred other investment. I guess the building was here and cheap.

It might not be that bad.

It is near the highways and not near the residential dysfunction of the East, so it might not be that bad. It is probably very secure. They weren't going to get desirable walk in traffic anywhere in NO East, and this is a secure location with lots of parking and not too far off the interstate. Really it is just across the canal from not being in NO East.
