Old man stuff, I know.

Does anyone else really enjoy Dessert Wines?

It’s something relatively newer to me, but I really enjoy them, particularly Port and Madeira. I find the complexity of them, and the different styles to be fascinating. I enjoy just having a little glass sometimes during the week after dinner as a treat, or instead of dessert out at dinner.

I don’t have a huge amount of experience with Vinsanto or higher end sherry, and none with Sauternes (yet).

Anyone else a fan? What do you have at home? What are you drinking?

Port drinker mainly. Not sure I have every really sought out my favorite per se. Just like experimenting with whatever is out there.

When we go to Montreal ports after dinner is always a highlight. Several places have had port flights.

In the last few years have really been getting into digestifs as well.

Spent a week in the Douro Valley this summer, Port is definitely on my rotation now.
More of a LBV/Ruby guy than a Tawny, but to each their own.

White Port with Tonic and a lemon is a criminally underrated summer drink.

ETA: Some pics.

I enjoy a nice ice wine or Moscato every once in a while, usually after seafood, but I am far from an expert.

During a trip to Tuscany a few years ago we brought back some half bottles of 25 year old Vin Santo which was exceptionally good.

Also like Sauternes and a great vintage port.

Careful. Once you enter the world of Sauternes, you may never go back.

One of the best appetizer courses available on earth is sautéed foie gras with a great Sauternes. If you can’t get the real foie gras, a good pate will do.

Sauternes or Port with Stilton cheese is a wonderful combination.

Been sipping on a nice little Ruby Port LBV for a little bit now.

Have a Madeira 10 year sercial on deck.

Right now. There’s a few high rated decently priced Sauternes I have my eye on.

Is that from Far Niente? Was in Napa and I almost went there but changed at last minute. Regret it now.

We have some of this at the pizza place. I have been known to hand it out to wine drinkers

quote:

80% Trebbiano, 20% Malvasia
The winery has aways been very proud of his vinsantos. Produced using the traditional method . A choice of Malvasia, Trebbiano and Canaiolo. The grapes selected lie on mats for a minimum of 4 months , in order to obtain the maximum of dryness. The pressed juice remains in “caratelli” of different sizes for 5 years. After carefully choosin specific caratelli only the finest is bottled. Extensively complex and high level of oxidation create one of the best vinsanto’s in Tuscany

Was shocked to find out that summer temps in the Duoro Valley normally exceed 105. Also did not know that the fact that many of the older Portuguese Port wineries carry English names, is due to a treaty that Portugal signed with England, under which the English sent troops to help repel an invasion from Napoleon. Big Port fan and even more so now that I live next door in Spain.

I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I'm always looking for something new to try.

My second choice is Inskillin Ice Wine...

Yep, I want to say that very few companies are still owned by Portuguese families.

Staying at the Quintas in the area was genuinely one of my favorite vacations to date. I highly recommend it if you can swing it. It’s a great place to just get away and unplug while eating/drinking like a king.

I like a Sauternes in place of dessert. Liquid gold.

Muscat Beaumes de Venise

Fantastic dessert wine that pairs well with foie gras, dank cheese, and fruit based desserts. I recommend the rose.

Don't throw away the Liquid Gold bottle from Far Niente. That is really gold leaf on the bottle Dolce is really sweet, but a great dessert wine in small portions. Also, I enjoy Limoncello every night. It is also sweet, but a digestive and at almost every restaurant in Italy, for free, after dinner.
