First Look: Dead Poet aims to transcend the college bar vibe near LSU

Honestly, the bar looks pretty cool. They did a good job with it. The theme even seems like it could be successful somewhere.... But I just don't know what drew them to pick this location.

I like to think that I would try it one day. The pictures of the place and the drinks at least have me interested.... But there are too many other options that aren't so close to the ghetto and drunk college kids. I'll probably just stick to those places.

For those too lazy to click on the link:
quote:

Christian Grimaldo, bar manager at Dead Poet, says the unique look helps define the bar’s mission—to break the mold of a “college bar” altogether.

“I think that people have a desire for something more in this area, and we wanted to provide that,” Grimaldo says. “It was frustrating for me when I went to visit other SEC schools because, yeah, there were ‘divey’ bars, but there was also always at least one nice bar that you could bring your parents to or get a nice cocktail without having to worry about getting your shoes dirty. I always felt Baton Rouge deserved something like that, too.”

To my knowledge, they have been doing well in the soft opening.

Imo, if RD can't make it in that spot, no one can.

I went last night actually.

Cool bar with a nice draft beer selection, great margaritas, and a solid decour. Even had multiple TV's with sports games on to my surprise.
A lot of groomed mustache with Jean jacket types (read, "hipsters"), but it didn't take anything away for me.

Only thing, is that there is a lot of unused space in there. Specifically in front of the band stage. Makes it feel empty.

Personally, I think they should look into being kind of what Chelsea's was. A good restaurant that also has a solid bar/live music scene. (And now I'm hungry for a grilled cheese sandwich)

I was there last night too. Friend owns the place and he’s pretty experienced in the bar world so I hope the area really supports DP. To be honest, I think the crowd was more a result of the band than a representation of the bar. But either way, it doesn’t bother me either.

The jean jacket couple you saw, I used to babysit the girl. I feel old.

I’d love to see the place do well. Much needed in the area.

Agreed.

Me and my friends are upper classmen at LSU and live on East Boyd.
This place will be a really nice alternative to going grab a good beer at Chimes being that we can walk to the Dead Poet easily.

They are buying that Almaza next door and working on a late-night cravings restaurant right next door.

"DeMatteo says the restaurant will focus on fried breakfast foods and sandwiches and is expected to open sometime in April."

seems unnecessarily bright in there. they need a dimmer switch for those lights, or possible some kind of glass opaque to dim it a little more.

A few of my friends have played shows there during the soft opening and were extremely impressed both by the management and the number of people they were getting despite the fact that LSU was on winter break at the time. My band was invited to play too, but the gig was on short notice so we couldn't swing it. I'm sure we'll book a show there for some time in March or April.

I may stop by after the LSU Basketball game saturday to check it out.

This will be clutch if the place is good. The one thing Bogies doesn't have is food, and late night eats near campus is pretty much just Plucker's, Sonic, Taco Bell, and Louie's. Good bar food open late will be an excellent addition to the campus scene.

Has he ever left the LSU area?

I fully get that older college kids want an alternative to Fred's and Bogies. I just don't know if there's enough of them to keep a bar that size afloat

Pretty sure Ellen Ogden did the artwork. Chick is getting herself some might nice business these past couple years. Almost every mural and painted menu in town was done by her.
