Why does most Creole/Cajun seasoning still come in these cheap arse containers?

Is it really that hard to move into the 21st century and use something that closes properly?

Yes, it’s hard. It’s a big move for companies financially.

You have to change your supply and suppliers. You have to use up your inventory of packaging and find a spot where you switch over to the new containers without running out of old containers and without having to waste many (costs money).

Now you have to figure out labels. Do you print them or do you get them preprinted? How do you put the labels on the bottles? Not to mention new label design.

What about new shipping boxes for the new bottles? That changes tie count, pallet count, etc.

Ok, now you have to get pictures of the new products because Wal mart will demand them for their website. So that’s a whole month long project getting photos and submitting them through the Wal mart system.

Yes, companies can do it and it’s done often. But no, it’s not easy. And it costs money. Or….you keep the packaging you have now and not worry about losing money switching over. As long as competitors are using the old packages, you don’t need to change. Kudos to the one company who does change first though.

Then there’s the bigger problem of quality. Light fades the color of spices so putting Cajun seasoning in clear plastic jars can affect the appearance of the product. So that’s something new the companies must deal with. Yes, others do it, but these companies not doing it now don’t have to worry about it.

I get what you are saying, but virtually all other seasonings come in a screw-type plastic container. It’s only the Louisiana seasonings that do not. Something doesn’t add up.

Copycat business. Tony’s came in a carton so then did everyone else.

They are all making money, why change?

Plus, most of the seasonings are made by the same couple of seasoning companies. It’s just how the industry in LA is. Same companies, same suppliers, etc.

Most local food companies change packaging when WalMart makes them or when their suppliers tell them their materials are being phased out.

If you shop at Costco you can get Tony’s in a big plastic jar. Big, but not ridiculously big.

Isn't the container tinted red?

I would’ve said brown. Tinted a color, at least.

To the OP:

The reasons are complicated.

The spiral wrapped paper board packaging is cheaper and at least partially biodegradable.

The plastic shaker jars are more expensive and take 10,000 years to breakdown - even longer for the caps (maybe 10,002 years).

Most cajun seasoning users like the fact that if they want, they can use the entire package in their jambalaya, and the paper/foil container empties quicker, leaving them more beer drinking time.

Tradition. Easy to recognize the current can in the pantry.

They had no idea anyone was interested in them making a change. They thought everything was going fine.

All of the other reasons already listed.

Did you know you can buy an empty plastic jar from Amazon and dump your paper can into it, Then scan and print a new color laser label to glue to your amazon plastic jar? If you really want to change your Tony's container. That seems like not a lot of trouble to go through if it helps you to be able to sleep at night. A good therapist might also be able to help you work through it. Call the Ed Psych Dept at LSU. They may have a grad student doing their Dissertation research on this exact mental problem who would be happy to work you through this problem.

You're welcome! Happy to help. Have you ever worried about the shape of Ketchup bottles?

OP, go online and buy some plastic containers and screw on tops that are sold separately and will cost you approx. $1.25 for both items. Transfer your Tonys to the plastic container. After using 8-10 times, the plastic seal top will be harder to "snap shut" due to the fine seasoning dust particles that build up in the tight seal crevices. Your seasoning will also fade and break down faster due to the UV and natural light. FYI , the 8 oz. carboard containers cost ..42 cents.

I had that very problem with the snap lid on Old Bay last night. I wiped it as much as I could and it still would not snap completely shut.

My problem with that packaging is opening it when you first go to use it. You punch down the tab, but it stays connected on the straight edge. If you're lucky and it breaks off completely, now it's stuck in the can with the seasoning.

BTW, did you know Slap Ya Momma seasoning was in the Leonard and Penny's apartment on the Big Bang Theory?
