Craft Beer Battle 3 tier system

Older Article but a good one

Craft-beer volumes grew just 1.6% last year, according to trade association the Beer Institute, the slowest growth in at least 10 years.
Growth is being driven entirely by direct sales from brewers to customers, mainly through taprooms and brewpubs. Direct sales last year grew 24.2%—accounting for one in 12 craft beers sold—while the remainder of craft-beer sales declined, according to the Beer Institute.

In response, the two sides are waging a lobbying war across the U.S. over exceptions to the post-prohibition “three-tier system” that keeps the production, distribution and retailing of alcohol separate in many states.
quote:
Roughly 9% of bar traffic across the U.S. now moves through brewery taprooms and brewpubs, according to data from MillerCoors. In Denver and San Diego, the figure is 35%.

But the Texas Craft Brewers Guild doesn’t think the 2013 law went far enough. The trade association is lobbying for breweries to be allowed to sell beer to go, something wineries, distilleries and brewpubs are already permitted to do.

Beer sales are slowing, no surprise.

Kind of weird how “pro free market” Republican run states like Texas and Louisiana are more restrictive and have more government red tape in the beer industry than those anti-free market Democrat run states like California, Oregon and Vermont.

They aren't pro free market. They are pro big business.
Use buzz words like free market and capitalism.

I have no excuse for Texas but Louisiana has never been pro-small government.
Vermont and Oregon both have a libertarian bent to them even though they are wildly liberal. Also hops grow there

You know what's restrictive?
Income tax.
Income tax.

I would say we've slowly been moving away from a "quantity of quality" mindset when looking at the average consumer.
Beer growth slowing I still think is more of a health issue. Health is big right now, people are dieting more and beer doesn't fit into the keto movement. Even though the carbs are fermented but what do I know.
all I know is that wine is just fricking grapes and I don't see the hype with it all. Hopefully, NBA players get into sours or juice, we can all dream.

I could probably search and find, but there was an article several years ago about how the amount spent on alcohol stays relatively the same, percentage wise, and the pie just shifts based on trends. Wine gets a greater share at some points and falls at others. Same for whiskey and beer.
Beer has seen a boom obviously, probably more of a natural trend. It has to fall off at some time as popularity or other spirits rise.

It's all about money.
Big alcohol manufacturers don't want to lower the barrier to entry.
The middle men distributors that have a MONOPOLY don't want small to medium manufacturers to cut them out.
Retails probably don't necessarily care, but they don't want to upset the apple cart.
So these groups ESPECIALLY THE DISTRIBUTORS THAT HAVE A MONOPOLY have spent literally BILLIONS of dollars lobbying politicians by funneling money legally to the campaigns of republicans and democrats.
It's pretty unreal they've been able to sustain this monopoly for so long but the general public doesn't understand it.

Yeah, in LA, the distributors give lots of campaign contributions to the politicians to keep their protection.

That's not really at all what is going on in Louisiana.
I'm not saying what is going on in Louisiana is not really shitty, of course.
