Common practice for bar tender to keep the change?

Ordered to go from walkons. Grabbed a beer at the bar while I was waiting. $4.45. Gave the girl a $20. She brought my change…$15, not $15.55.
I didn’t really care. I was gonna leave it as part of the tip anyway. But I thought it was a little presumptuous of her to not even offer me my full change.
Is this common practice nowadays?

Was the 4.45 before tax?
Not an experienced bartender if they didn't bring you a 5, ten 1's and you loose change.

You are a horrible person if you are expecting actual coins in that situation

Wait, you think expecting to the correct change makes him a horrible person? I’d argue stealing his money makes the bar tender a shite person. This has nothing to do with how much he will or won’t tip.
Where do you draw the line there? If the food was $95.50 can they keep $4.50? Or is that different?

Interesting.
11% tax on beer these days. Well a weird 11.1% tax.

Personally, when I was paying cash per round I never experienced that. I always got my correct change back.
For years now I basically drink at one bar 90% of the time and just run a tab that the bartender jots down in a small notebook next to the register and pay it in cash before leaving. I've been going there so long that if they see me pulling up, my drink is on the bar when I walk in.

It’s laziness and not doing your job right.
Like you, I would have given the coins as a tip and in the end, it doesn’t bother me. But that doesn't make it the proper way.

Yes, it is common in many food & beverage service settings.

I’ve had them keep like $.50 before. I would’ve given them a dollar if they had given me my change, but oh well.

Typically when I see this they round down. In this situation they would give you a $10 and six $1s. More than likely you will give them some of the $1's back and they can balance the register afterwards.
The part that drives me nuts is when they ask you if you want your change.

Been going to bars all my life. I avoid bars with employees like this. It's BS and will affect the tip. I'm a good tipper but at least earn it and don't take it. Small minded people like this miss the bigger tips.

The bar i go to when I walk in I hand them my credit card and tell them to open a tab. They give me card back and put a $50 hold on it. If I forget to close out they charge me for what I drank and add a 20% tip. I typically tip that or more anyway.

In poor taste on the bartenders part. Never make that assumption

Maybe she couldn’t figure out the coins so just brought bills hoping you wouldn’t notice.
