Coffee pot craped out on me this weekend. I'm in need of a new one with a built-in grinder. Any recommendations?

I've had a Cuisinart Grind & Brew for a over a year with no problems. It doesn't make the best cup of coffee you've ever had (no combo unit will) but it's a hell of alot better than a Kcup. And the convenience is worth it for your everyday cup.

I still have a stand alone grinder and French press for when I'd rather that

Hate to disagree but I had some coffee out of a $4,500 built in that was amazing. I briefly considered buying one but can only imagine the maintenance costs on that thing must approach a BMW. Grinder, frother, brewer, flavors, water through the wall, clip in milk carafe and makes all kinds of coffees by the push of a button and allowed you to do custom programs.

I used to go the built in grinder route(cusinart I believe) and they all crap out. I now have the Baratza Encore grinder and a Technivorm Moccamaster brewer. Each piece does their intended jobs with no frills and should last years. You are eventually going to get here, may as well head here now.

I had one for years. It made great coffee, but it was pain to clean all the parts. If you don’t clean it properly, it turns into a science experiment very quickly. I now use a $17 Mr Coffee with reuseable filter. Keep it simple.

The Cuisinart is a pain in the arse...good coffee, but pain in the arse. The grounds build up in the chute connecting the grinder to the filter. If you don't remember to check it and clean it every couple/few days, you'll be greeted by a pot of pale brown hot water. It's messy to clean the chute, too.

Is the goal timed brew? Do you want to wake up in the morning to a fresh pot of coffee?

Here's the question of the day, how much flavor does ground coffee lose sitting in the basket waiting for the next morning?

Let's say you go to bed at 10. You have a $35 Mr. Coffee and a $50 Cuisinart Grinder. You grind your beans, put them in the basket. clean your grinder, and go to bed.

Your beans are sitting there, ground, for eight hours in a closed-but-not-sealed container. (The coffee pot lid is closed)

Do the beans go stale enough in those eight hours to warrant an instant-grind?

It's an honest question.

The best drip machine, it actually heats the water to the proper temperature (as opposed to regular drip machines)

Yes. Though I think most people are so used to bad, stale, over roasted coffee that they wouldn’t taste a difference. If I recall correctly, beans are most fresh a week or two after roasting, grinds are most fresh within 24 hours of grinding.

OP: get a Baratza Encore or Capreso Infinity grinder and an OXO or Bonavita coffee maker. You’ll be all in around $300 to $400, which is the same price as a good all in one unit and you’ll have two machines that should never break.

I have had the baratza encore for about a year and my bonavita for probably 4 years. I descale the bonavita every 4-6 months and it works like a top. I use either French truck or cafe citeaux beans here in BR. I can get both of those fresh on a regular basis. I can definitely tell the different flavors etc in each style.

The grinder makes a significant difference as well, as I used a cheaper grinder for a long time.

I got lucky on the bonavita.... was in bed bath with the wife and was walking by the clearance table. I was already about to pull the trigger on one... They had 2 on clearance for $99, then add in that 20% coupon and I got a great deal on a $200 coffee pot.

$4,500 built in...

Most here know I worked (VP QA) for Groen Division of Dover Industries at one time.

We/Groen (Now Unified Brands) made an automatic Coffee maker back in those days. It made a great cup of coffee and had a lifetime warranty, which after 10,000 years costs you about $0.50 a year.

We also made one for hospitals and prisons (different design) that made 500 gallons of coffee at a time. It was considerably more expensive and also had a lifetime warranty.

Never saw one of either kind returned. I would know, because I chaired the product review committee that reviewed all warranty returns.

We also made a coffee maker for nuclear submarines, sized to drop through one of the hatches in the deck of the sub. Most people probably don't know everything that goes into a sub is either built in when the sub is built, or must be sized to drop through a deck hatch. Subs are Navy vessels. Those coffee makers made really good coffee.

Having said this, the best cup of coffee I can bring to mind was one I had at the Shell Gas Station on the corner of Lake Castle Road and Cotton Hill Road in Madison a Few weeks back. Came from a Bunn Gas Station coffee maker.

Useless information - we also made the machine that made (popped and coated the popcorn) Cracker Jacks.
