interesting. i have a larger chemex that i can get about 4 cups out of (more or less) so the wife and i can both have 2 cups and i haven't timed it but i would say it takes maybe a minute to drain out and i try not to over pour into the chemex.

is there anything purtier and better-smelling than the first 'bloom' of coffee when you hit it with that hot water?

our old Bunn Phasebrew died a couple months ago and we just started using the chemex. after having to get up every morning and make the coffee by hand with the chemex we decided it was time for a new machine. Got the Oxo Barista Brain and very happy with it. the brewing process it uses it meant to mimic pour over.

Yeah I totally understand not wanting to do pour over every morning, especially before work. I end up skipping it about once a week when I’m running a little behind. I’ve heard good things about the Oxo as well as the Bonavita.

The Ottomatic looks nice if you want to still use the chemex. But it’s quite expensive.

if we would get everything measured and setup before bed it wasnt too bad... just got old on a daily basis.

yea those are the 2 i was looking at... we needed a clock/timer so oxo it is. it looks a little nicer on the counter as well.

i looked at the ottomatic in the past. looks really cool but gets pretty bad reviews...

preach!

most of what goes into prep for me can be done in 1-2 minutes. its the remembering to go over to the chemex to see if it needs more water every minute or 2 until its done is the hard part.

Whatever you do, whether is be manual or electric, go with a burr grinder.

Kidding of course. It would be cool to taste test your method vs a burr grinder to see if the typical coffee drinker could notice much if any difference.

The difference between blade and burr is consistency. If you try to use a blade to get a coarse grind for a french press, you are going to end up with boulders and powder with about half ground to what you actually want.

I've tried several auto pourovers. Was going to get the Oxo (when I got the Oxo grinder) but can't remember why we ended up getting the Kitchenaid instead. It was ok, but we recently switched to the Cuisinart "pureprecision" and like it much better.

The Handground manual grinder has a ceramic burr. I’m getting it today so I’ll try it out and post a review.

I have a LIDO 2 and love it. Interested to see how you like the handground grinder.

I use a chemex on the weekends for me and the wife with the bleached filters (if you get the natural make sure to wet it first or you'll get the filter taste in your coffee). Hario v60 pour over if I'm just doing a single cup though. Having a kettle with a thermometer is nice. Just make sure to weigh everything and write down your ratios. I usually stick around 15:1 or 16:1 water to coffee in weight.

So I had my first go with the Handground manual grinder and Chemex.

The grinder was more efficient and easier to crank than I expected. I thought I would have to press it down fairly hard and vigorously crank for at least 2 minutes for 20 grams of coffee, but it was almost effortless and I got through 20 grams in about a minute, maybe less, and I went at a moderate speed.

The grind consistency looked fine to my naked, amateur eye. No noticeably bigger chunks and minimal fine particles.

Based on the one use so far, I’m very satisified with the Handground and my choice to opt for it over an electric. One less clunky appliance on my counter, and I can pretty easily take it with me when I travel.

I enjoyed brewing with the Chemex. It produced a very smooth coffee. Not bitter at all, but could have been slightly stronger. I probably didn’t use enough beans or maybe I will reduce the grind size next time. It will be fun playing around with the different variables to get to my personal “favorite” recipe. I also look forward to making some iced coffee with it.

Your grind was probably too coarse, but fair warning: hand cranking gets exponentially more annoying the finer you go. Using a hand crank for espresso is tortuous.

That’s what I’m thinking. I had it on level 5 today and will try it at 4 tomorrow (level 1 is espresso setting). I tried it briefly on level 4 today and it wasn’t noticeably more difficult, but I imagine the espresso setting gets significantly more challenging. I’ll try that out tomorrow too and report back.
