Lots of good recommendations here but adding Codfathers up spruill ave. Best fish and chips in the city.

Grill 225 located in the Market Pavilion Hotel on Bay Street - great steaks, but upscale (meaning expensive!)

Realize that downtown Chrarleston is a huge tourist trap and the restaurants follow suit. Husk is lame AF, and Hall's, which I used to love, is so crowded you can't hear yourself think.

I enjoy Charleston but it's changing and not for the better.

I did enjoy Melfi's a few weeks ago. The Gnudi and straciatella were fantastic. They do claim "italian only wine" which is kind of nuts, as I wanted a Malbec. Argentina is half italian...

Only got to try Rodney Scott's BBQ. Would recommend.

Grabbed drinks at The Ordinary. Great selection of bourbon there. I believe they served oysters as well.

How so? Has it become too commercialized?

Used to work for a company based in Charleston so traveled there frequently. It's a big foodie city. There are restaurants everywhere.

What I ate was good but nothing NOLA quality (which I was I was hoping for). The most memorable foods were the cornbread at Edmunds Oast and Lewis BBQ. John did a pretty good job of opening a TX BBQ joint in Charleston.

I was there a few weeks ago and dining with some local friends. I've been going there for quite a few years and one friend has been there for 20 years.

The traffic is absolutely bonkers. The hippies-and-breweries thing is moving in. I feel like downtown is losing some charm and unique feel in favor of mass-market brands.

Also perhaps social media isn't doing any favors to a town like this in terms of culture. Now that every upper middle class dood checks in at Husk, the place is jam packed and it's just not that good in the first place. Going to Husk is like buying your first RX300.

I'm branching out more when I'm there and getting off the main areas, trying to find unique and untapped spots. I'm also trying to visit upstate more, too, as there are some hidden gems in SC.

Don't get me wrong, I love Charleston. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Somewhat, however the real problem is Yankees moving down. Ironic a guy from Chicago posted that statement

There’s another Codfathers in Summerville by me in Nexton.

Same food, cleaner building, less chance of being shot by Spruill Ave hood rats.

You’re right. Too much emphasis on trying to win social media cred instead of concentrating on the food. Lots of places want to make each plate worthy of an Instagram picture, which means portions shrink and prices go up.

I much prefer smaller, “dive” kind of places. Much less pretentious.
