Charcoal out, Deanie’s Seafood in

So we all agreed that Charcoal was not great and overpriced. Here comes Deanie’s Seafood to move into the space.
I don't go to the one in Bucktown so not sure how good the food is. Mostly since I don't eat a lot of fried seafood.
"A 6,000-Square-Foot Deanie’s Seafood Is Coming to the Garden District
The Garden District trades a burger bar for an oyster bar this December"
"Deannie’s Seafood, will unleash boiled and fried seafood, crawfish boil potatoes that arrive at the table in lieu of bread, and mile-high piles of onion rings, on the Garden District when it opens its third location this December.
The newest edition of the perennial seafood favorite will take over the 6,000 square foot, two level spot on the corner of Magazine and Jefferson that previously housed Charcoal’s Burger Bar, reports Ian McNulty.
While the menu will be very much the same as the other locations in Bucktown and the French Quarter, the newest Deanie’s is getting a raw oyster bar and a chargrilled oyster station. The new Deanie’s also has a wrap-around balcony.
John and Alma “Deanie” Livacari first opened Deanie’s on Old Hammond Highway in 1961. The restaurant has moved since then and now has locations in Bucktown and in the French Quarter. The Bucktown location opened over 50 years ago. The French Quarter location opened in 2002. The Chifici family has run Deanie’s since 1980.
Blaine Prestenback and Craig Walker, Jr. opened Charcoal’s Burger Bar in 2013, a long six years after they bought the vacant lot. The gourmet burger restaurant served its final burger on May 30, 2017."

People here will probably shite on Deanie's but they're really good at fried seafood.

I like Deanies, but I wouldn’t go there in the garden district with so many better options

Been going to Deanie's in Bucktown regularly since the 1970's.
Consistently good fried seafood.

Deanies makes a damn good BBQ shrimp. That's all I ever ate there though.

Just a quick correction to the article. The location is Jackson and Magazine, not Jefferson and Magazine.

How could I forget the BBQ shrimp. They're excellent. Also, the stuffed flounder, crawfish/crab balls, stuffed mushrooms, onion rings are all way above average. It's not fine dining but it doesn't try to be. I've been going to the Bucktown location for over 30 years. Can't say I've ever been disappointed other than the 2 times we mistakenly went during Essence Fest weekend.

Based on what y'all are saying I am going to have to give the BBQ shrimp a shot.

I am a Deanie's fan. their BBQ shrimp have great flavor, but the FQ location, where I go, the last 3 times I have ordered the BBQ shrimp, they were way overcooked and almost impossible to peal.

You have to take them out of the pan as soon as they get to the table or they will continue to cook in the sauce. It's a dangerous game you have to play. You run the risk of some boiling sauce splash wounds.

Yep, I put out the stuffed shrimp every year at Christmas before we eat and it goes pretty quick, only behind the Kartchners boudin.

Charcoals, a burger restaurant that didn't use charcoal to cook its burgers (was named after a dog) and used a guy with an Australian accent in its radio ads....wonder why the place didn't make it?

no love for Deanie's fried artichoke hearts? Thats one of the best things they do IMO.

I'm most excited for the oyster bar. I used to make the long, 10 minute drive to Superior Seafood or Manales for oysters, but now I can just talk to Deanies. Theyll also have chargrilled oysters and I don't think I've had a *bad* chargrilled oyster before.
I've never had Deanies fried seafood. I'm usually satisfied with Joey Ks fried seafoo. I'm happy others are able to recommend other nonfried foods.

I love that one. Clearly the guy had never had shell on shrimp and had no clue what to do.
