Have you checked out the new Weber Summit Charcoal Grill? A lot of reviews are coming in that is basically a kamado that is easier to move and won't be subjective to any cracking while also easier to bring temps down if you over shoot.

If you want a metal version of a kamado style cooker check out(none locally unfortunately)the Broil King Keg. I have one and it really pretty cool. You can even hook it up to a trailer hitch and take wherever you can drive to. LINK Also soon to be released is an all aluminum kamado cooker by Blaze Grills. LINK

The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill is a direct competitor of any kamado cooker and I think a better choice.

Depending on your needs, you can get a Classic Joe for $1k and a Big Joe for 1500.

Wait and buy it at a Costco roadshow and you can take another ~22% off of that.

I'll second the Kamado Joe. I have the Big Joe and love it. Chose it over the BGE because it was essentially the same product but with more accessories/better cost.

I have the Broil King Keg also. Had it for about six years. It has been a good grill but is starting to rust on the outside and the paint is peeling. Also getting harder to hold a temperature for any length of time. Looking to get a Primo or Big Joe soon.

Blaze looks interesting also.

The oval shape of the Primo XL is really nice and it holds temps like a champ. The Firebox Divider is really handy if you're cooking for a smaller group or if you want to maximize 2 zone cooking. I was planning on a BGE up until my contractor recommend Primo...after researching it made much more sense for us to go with Primo.

Primo is made in America too (Tucker, Georgia)
BGE is made in Mexico.

I'm sold. Ordered my XL last night. I'm probably more excited than I should be.

Who can afford to spend over $1000 on a backyard grill?

Lots of people spend way more than that on backyard grilling. Think of all the cost that goes into an outdoor kitchen. There is a post over on the outdoor board right now where someone spent $80K on his outdoor space. That was certainly more than just the grilling and I am sure that it increased the value of his home substantially, but realistically, I think that $1k on a grill is not that out of the realm of possibilities.

I have a large BGE, and I love it. I would spend whatever I spent on it again if something happened to it. I don't even remember what the total came to. If you break it down on a "per cook" basis, you aren't actually spending that much over a good stamped steel grill if you are using it. and the premium is so worth it. I cook 2-3 times per week on mine and It makes the whole process so much more enjoyable. I have the digi-Q and I can literally set it and forget it for an 18 hour cook. I just don't know how that can be done on any other type of equipment. Certainly not for less money.
