This is a brand new never been used 4 gallon jambalaya pot. It was given to me by a friend after sitting in the unopened sealed cardboard box for a year. So I’m not able or not interested in trying to return this as it was free.
I did have a burner stand built for it which is why you see the grind mark on the side so it can rest into tube burner stand.

However I’m just wondering if these marks on the side are some kind of crack, or if they are casting marks? There are no marks inside the pot (see last picture) I still have not used the pot.
I did not notice the marks until now as I brought the pot still in the sealed box to have the burner stand built for it.

Appears to be cast marks especially the second pic.

Fill it with water and get it boiling. If its cracked it will certainly leak then but I think its casting marks.

The spot where it is, at first kinda made me think the box woulda been dropped onto that leg of the pot if it were a crack. But seems like there would be marks inside the pot if that were the case. Will try water.

I just wanna make sure it’s safe to use. I’d hate to have a small batch of pork belly cracklings or some seafood frying in this thing and it crack open dumping boiling oil into not burner and on cement...

The good thing is, you can get cast iron welded if it is cracked, but not every welder can do a good job on cast iron.

grind that shite smooth and it wont hurt a thing, its cast iron, then you will see for sure if its a crack.

if it were cracked it would break in pieces as soon as you heated it up

Do you think the inside doesn’t show a crack because of seasoning hiding it?

Man I’m with you id be careful for sure. What kind of burner do you use for that? If it’s a standard outdoor burner as said I’d just boil water for a couple hours, by a couple hours I mean probably like all dang day one weekend.

Then I’d set that thing a long way from any structure and try to heat up some oil. It’s likely perfectly fine but I’d be careful.

If you know the manufacturer, why not contact them to ask?

If it truly is a crack I don’t trust the pot to boil oil deep frying with it.

Did you drop yours? Is the crack around a leg like this mark?

I bought it at a pawn shop years ago. it was 10.00. my grandpa was a collector of black pots and i thought that it would be a good gift as it's really old. he noticed the crack and said that i can keep it but continue to use it. it's been 35 years and i'm still using it.
