The portions served at most restaurants are enormous and almost impossible to finish by most. I hope this portion downsizing trend continues. It'll cut down the amount of fatties I gotta look at.

Pasta dishes Carrabaas $14-$18.
Diguilios Bros pasta $14.50-$21.50
Homemade pasta dishes at Ninos $16-$18
Not to mention Ninos $12 three course lunch- soup or salad, one of about 8 pastas and desert.
I'm having the Duck egg pasta for lunch today.

certain foods I don't mind paying more for, but Italian and Mexican are two that should never be expensive
the cost to make an average pasta or taco dish is dirt cheap
my bro in law was a GM of a high end Italian joint here in Dallas and told me the other night his average dish cost him $3-4 to make. the average price on the menu was $25. pasta is flour and water, sauce is tomatoes and seasoning.
bread is flour, water, yeast, and seasonings
macaroni grill has done the same thing and I like it better than carrabas.

I ate at Carraba's a couple weeks ago. I didn't seem to notice a change in portion size. The bread was brought to the table without asking as well. I had the pasta with shrimp and scallops--which turned my bowels into liquid about two hours later (should have stuck with Chicken Bryan).
Outback changed portion sizes and their salads (much smaller) several years ago and I stopped going. I would go 4-6 times a year, and I have been once in about 5 or 6 years. My life is a little less bright without a bi-monthly dose of Alice Springs Chicken.
I would much rather pay a dollar or two more for an entree than have its quality compromised to save money.

Well one see my comparison above because the two I reference are local small Italian restaurants with much better food for the same price which are reasonable.
And I'd be willing to bet your bro in law is not considering the cost of overhead which would be general liability and workers comp insurance, property insurance ( which is expensive for restaurants due to huge chance of kitchen fires), utilities, linen, volatile food costs, cleaning service, licenses, his salary, service on debt, payroll and payroll taxes, inventory, the liquor the bartender is giving away, the food the employees are stealing, the replacement to the broken dishes daily, professional services ( attorney, financial etc...) and any number of a hundred other expenses.
And THEN try to make a profit.
It is very hard for small restaurants to make a living and most successful ones are owners that are married to their place and work to the bone. Chain restaurants mostly are corporate and have a fiduciary duty to perform appropriately for the stockholders they work for.
It ain't all flour, water, seasonings and tomatos.

Outback is the worst. Same boat for us. Stopped going about 5 years ago
Last time we went paid $20 for a small steak and about 6 green beans
The mom and pop Italian and mexican places by me do just fine charging less than $10 a plate and making sure you get your money worth

Thanks Obama. Chains are now at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to labor costs due to Obamacare.
I've never been to Carrabba's but it seem to be one of the more respected chains.
