I am going to try and smoke my first ever brisket this weekend on an electric smoker. I think I am going to put a pellet tray in there with it to try and get more consistent smoke in the smoker. Is it possible with this type setup to achieve some smoke rings? Any suggestions?

Yes. Colder the meat is before putting on the smoker, more pronounced the ring.

Will there be enough air flow through the unit to allow a pellet tray to burn?

ETA: Thanks for the down vote but no input

Smoke rings are so unimportant to good BBQ. Focus on getting it to taste good and not dry out. If there’s a smoke ring, cool. If not, who cares?

I guess I went about asking it the wrong way. I am more interested to see if I can get the smoke that I am looking for using a pellet tray inside the electric smoker. I am worried about there not being enough airflow. I was associating getting the smoke I wanted with a smoke ring on the meat.

remember that moisture allows for better penetration

I get what you're trying to do, but any good BBQ will have a smoke ring.

Smoke ring will develop if the meat is cold. It has zero effect on taste.

Me

You eat with your eyes first. And brisket with a smoke ring looks a million times more appetizing

That is your opinion. Personally, I don't give a damn if there is one or not. It's all about the flavor for me. But YMMV.

To the OP, what brand and size is your smoker? There are literally hundreds of mods out there. I have an MES 40 with the cold smoke attachment that I fill once and let er rip. Folks devour my brisket.
As far as the smoke ring, it is formed by combustion gases. One way to get those gases is to put a couple of SMALL charcoal chips in with your smoking chips. I would only do this on an external attachment like the cold smoke box though. The local temps of the charcoal may be too high for the metal thickness in the chip tray or a little smoke box.

i never get a smoke ring and i think its because

the reason we don't get much of a smoke ring is because with electric smokers you are not burning off all of the oxygen in the chamber. The oxygen prevents the nitrites from doing their thing.

Brine in curing salt, it takes practice to figure how much salt and for how long to make it look good. That's the way to a faux smoke ring in electric.

Which electric? Cookshack and clones aren't know for it and masterbuilt doesn't do it either.

I have that same brinkman and use soaked chips thrown on the element (small handful every 30 min or so). I get a smoke ring.
